Description
Analyzing "can't log in" problems on a Sun[TM] Netra CT900
This document describes which troubleshooting steps to take when trying to resolve problems related to not being able to log in to a Sun Netra CT900 for the purpose of shelf or switch management.

Symptoms:

    * Can't login
    * Can't connect

Purpose/Scope:

This document describes which troubleshooting steps to take when trying to resolve problems related to logging into or connecting to a Sun Netra CT900. It may also assists with basic problems of connecting to Individual Node Boards.

Problems related to setting up user accounts is out of the scope of this document.

Steps to Follow
Please validate that each troubleshooting step below is true for your environment. The steps will provide instructions or a link to a document, for validating the step and taking corrective action as necessary. The steps are ordered in the most appropriate sequence to isolate the issue and identify the proper resolution. Please do not skip a step.
Step 1. Verify the power is good
This can be done either locally to the chassis, or remotely via ILOM commands. To do so remotely, you will need to connect to the ShMM which is covered in Step 3.
See <Document: 1019462.1> How to verify power on the Netra CT 900
Step 2: Verify the network cabling
There are a number of different connection methods, and a number of cables and ports to which to connect.
See <Document: 1019514.1> How to verify the network connections required for shelf administration of the Sun Netra CT 900
Step 3. Verify you can connect through the serial port
You will not be able to connect over a network if the IP address, MAC address, routing, etc is not setup on the ShMM, but you should always be able to connect over the serial connection.
See <Document: 1019404.1> How to verify the serial cabling on the Sun Netra CT 900
NOTE: If a serial connection fails, resetting the ShMM as outlined in Step 8 may help
Step 4. Verify there are no fault or warning LEDs
Again, this can be done either locally to the chassis, or remotely
See <Document: 1019516.1> How to identify and interperet the LEDs on the Netra CT 900 Systems
Step 5. Verify the System Management Module (ShMM) network configuration
Once you have a serial connection, you can both check and setup the ShMM network
See <Document: 1019501.1> How to verify the network configuration for the Shelf Management Module (ShMM) on the Sun Netra CT 900 system
Step 6. Verify the external network
Refer to:
<Document: 1017986.1>  Can't connect to server
< Document: 1005533.1 > How to verify network connectivity on an X64 platform
Step 7. Verify the internal network

To eliminate any internal network related problems
See <Document: 1019500.1> How to verify the internal network on the Sun Netra CT 900 system

 Step 8. Reset the ShMM If the connection problem is due to a hung ShMM, this step may shake it loose See <Document: 1019616.1> How to reset a System Management Module (ShMM) and monitor boot output on the Sun Netra CT 900 Step 9. Provide supporting data and open a Service Request.

At this point, if you have validated that each troubleshooting step above is true for your environment, and the issue still exists, further in-depth troubleshooting is required. Please provide supporting data and open a Service Request. See <Document: 1019438.1> How to gather data from the Sun Netra CT 900
