Goal

Service taking over Maintenance on HP Sold Libraries and potential issues.
A number of Oracle/STK Service areas world wide have been talking over maintenance on Oracle/STK built libraries sold through HP Corp.  There are some potential issues for the Oracle/STK service group in doing so.

Solution

Steps to Follow
HP personality module, both the physical module and the soft code module are proprietary to HP Corp. by contract with Oracle/STK.
They cannot be given to Oracle/STK Service personal under any circumstances.

This restriction extends to Oracle/STK parts made specifically for HP as part of their library sales and service program.

If Oracle/StorageTek takes over support, Oracle/STK service or the distributor can support the machine as a Oracle/StorageTek L700 not as a HP L700 for example, this also applies to all other Oracle/STK libraries.

The Oracle/STK Service area or the distributor will not be allowed access to HP code or spare parts through Oracle/STK normal channels as they belong to HP Corp. by contract.

* Oracle/STK HQ recommends that you DO NOT load STK code on the HP configured MPC, you can run on the HP MPC at it's current HP code level if that is what is determined to be best at the start, and then go to a STK MPC card when the HP MPC fails.  Or you can go directly to a STK MPC card now with the customers OK of course as the will have to reconfigure their back up solution to accept the 'STK library response'.

*The reason for this change in approach was due to discussions between Oracle/STK Relations Team to HP Corp. and Oracle/STK Support and a Oracle/STK legal review of the process.

The right for are Oracle/STK field or our distributors to get access to HP personality module or spare parts hasn't change and probably never will as things stand today.

  • Customer library  would also lose their 'HP friendly inquiry return' from the library and the library would be a 3rd party attach under the standard Oracle/STK type library.

  • Hopefully their back-up application will support this with the smallest amount of downtime and pain to the customer.
  • There will be some and possible server(s) reboot at least.   When the customer defines the new STK library instead of the current HP library.

  • The HP inquiry return is build into HP unique Microcode, and is not available to Oracle/STK personal from Oracle/STK HQ support or logistics, or engineering neither are Library parts built or sold to HP Corp. they are proprietary to HP Corp.

  • If the Local service area wishes to keep the library as a HP attach instead of converting it to a Oracle/STK attached library, they will have to acquire the proper HP sold parts for the library from HP Corp. or the HP parts distributor.  You can not legally get the parts or microcode from Oracle/STK.

  • There is no process in place for the local service area or distributor to buy the parts or code through Oracle/STK.

  •  Example of L700/L180 MPC pre-loaded with HP library microcode.

The MPC board(s) would have to be purchased from HP as these boards have a HP personality code module loaded on to them to support the HP inquiry string and the STK MPC boards do not. In other words, the MPC boards for HP are not orderable through Oracle/STK logistics and the STK MPC boards that are orderable, will not work on a L700/L180 attached to HP host or application software and return inquiry code of a HP A5595A library but would return the code of the standard STK L700/L180.
