Solution Type Technical Instruction Sure Solution 1020604.1 : Sun StorageTek 5320 NAS OS upgrade on two cluster-gateway systems which have mirrored volumes (via File Replicator)
PreviouslyPublishedAs 261508 Description OS upgrade procedure on NAS 5320 Cluster system on which the volumes are mirrored with File Replicator. The procedure given here is used to upgrade the NAS OS on the cluster gateway system which is mirrored with the remote site system which is also a cluster gateway system. Please note that the upgrade on both Primary and remote systems must be performed simultaneously to keep the mirroring intact. At the beginning of the installation process, the new NAS OS is uploaded to each of the NAS heads; this will take several minutes and can be performed while the system is in operation. The NAS OS is installed during a subsequent reboot of the head. The reboot operation will take slightly longer on this occasion than for a normal boot, but should complete in about 7-8 minutes. Steps to Follow The procedure is as below: Both the systems heads should be in normal state before starting the OS upgrade. 1. Upgrade the OS on both source and target Head-1 servers. 2. Reboot both source and target servers simultaneously. All volumes on Head-1 servers will migrate to respective Head-2 servers. 3. Check the mirroring status of all volumes. Take corrective action if volume is not in sync state. 4. After reboot, confirm the OS version on both Head-1 servers. 5. Recover both the systems to clustered operation by using recover option. 6. Reboot Primary-remote the Head-2 servers simultaneously. All volumes will migrate to respective Head-1 servers. 7. Check the mirroring status of all volumes. Take the corrective action if volume is not in sync state. 8. Now upgrade the OS of both source and target H2 servers. 9. Reboot both Head-2 servers and verify OS version. 10. Recover failover on both source and target. For step-by-step details of the NAS OS software upgrade process see the "Sun StorageTek NAS OS Administration Guide" [Part No. 819-4284], under the section "Upgrading NAS Software" (p191), and in particular note the section on cluster upgrades: "Upgrading Cluster Software Without Interrupting Service" (p192).
