Goal

Steps to take when replacing a physical tape drive on the backend of a VTL system.

Solution

Steps to Follow

1. Record 'device id' of current drive (in VTL Console GUI, under VirtualTape Library System>Physical Tape Libraries, highlight drive and 'device id' will be in right panel)
2. Unassign physical drive from VTL (in VTL Console GUI, under VirtualTape Library System>Physical Tape Libraries,  right click on drive to be removed and select 'Unassign')
3. Remove/replace physical drive in physical library
4. If using ACSLS, configure the new drive:  config drive 'panel_id'  (for example, if VTL has device id as 0,2, 1,12, enter 'config drive 0,2,1')
5. Assign new drive to VTL (in VTL Console GUI, under VirtualTape Library System>Physical Tape Libraries, right click physical library name, select 'Assign', and add device id recorded in step 1).
6. Perform a test migrate/export to validate new configuration.

Refer to VTL User's Guide or ACSLS ICAG for details on any step above (see Reference section below for links).
