Description
This document provides some pointers on how to verify your boot media exists and is bootable on Sun Fire(TM) X8400, X8420, X8440, X8450 Blade Servers
Symptoms:

  • system will not boot
  • boot fails
  • can't power up

Purpose/Scope:

This document provides some pointers on how to verify your boot media exists and is bootable on Sun Fire(TM) X8400, X8420, X8440, X8450 Blade Servers. It will cover identifying the various boot media that exist for the above systems.

Steps to Follow
Steps to follow

Overview

After the BIOS phase and when the POST is finished without error, the system will try to boot from the boot media.

Boot devices are many and varying eg:

  • CD-/DVD-ROM connected to USB port at front of Blade.

  • an internal hard disk or a raid device on the the internal SCSI controller

  • a PXE boot configuration over the network.

As there are varying bootable choices, this Infodoc will only consider the basic steps to verify.

Checking your bootable device is in the boot list

To check the device you want to boot from is in the boot list, press F8 during boot

Example

AMIBIOS(C)2004 American Megatrends, Inc.
BIOS Date: 05/31/07 10:57:53 Ver: 08.00.12
CPU : Dual Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 885
Speed : 2.60 GHz    Count : 8
DRAM Clocking CPU0 Core0/1 = 400 MHz, CPU1 Core0/1 = 400 MHz,
CPU2 Core0/1 = 400 MHz, CPU3 Core0/1 = 400 MHz
Sun Blade x8400 Server Module, 4 AMD North Bridges, Rev E6
1 NVidia CK8-04 PRO SB, 1 NVidia IO-4 Slave Bridge(s)
Board Serial Number  :0060HSV-0633000440
BMC Firmware Revision: 2.00 , BMC IP Address : 10.18.16.21
Initializing USB Controllers .. Done.
Press F2 to run Setup (CTRL+E on Remote Keyboard)
Press F8 for BBS POPUP (CTRL+P on Remote Keyboard)
Press F12 to boot from the network (CTRL+N on Remote Keyboard)
1491MB OK
.
.

If your boot device is not in the popup window, check to see if the device is seen by BIOS:

Enter BIOS using F2 via the console device. Then, using the cursor keys, go to the Boot tab.
Select Boot Device Priority. Verify that the device you wish to boot from is at level 1.
The devices will be displayed similar to those below.

* 01) [SCSI:#108 ID00 LUN0 LSILOGIC Logical Volume]

* 02) [USB:IntPort:AMI Virtual Floppy]

* 03) [USB:IntPort:AMI Virtual CDROM]

* 04) [PXE:Slot1.F1:IBA GE Slot 0201 v1231]

* 05) [PXE:Slot1.F0:IBA GE Slot 0200 v1231]

Checking your DVD-/CD-ROM media

If you insert a DVD-/CD-ROM media from which you wish to boot, and the boot fails, check out the following:

  • Make sure you setup the right boot media order in the BIOS of the system

  • When the drive is blinking all the time, it's indicating that the media isn't readable (e.g. broken or empty media). In this case please check the media and try to boot from a different media. The media will be ignored and the boot process selects the next boot media, e.g. hard disk or network.

  • If the media isn't bootable, e.g. just contains data but no bootable block, the DVD-/CD-ROM media will be ignored and the system try to start from a different media, e.g. hard disk or network.

Checking your PXE boot configuration

If you are trying to boot your system over the network, e.g. to install an Operating System on the server, you use PXE boot for this process. If you select the network interface as boot device, you will see the following during the startup process

Intel(R) Boot Agent GE v1.2.31
Copyright (C) 1997-2005, Intel Corporation

CLIENT MAC ADDR: 00 14 4F 0D B6 DE GUID: 080020FF FFFF FFFF FFFF 0003BAF16026
DHCP../

At this point the PXE boot agent tries to get the TFTP server address and boot image information from the DHCP server.

Issues and documentation

For possible issues in booting or BIOS refer to the Sun Blade 8000 Series product Notes at

The Sun Blade 8000 Series Modular System Online Information System (OIS) is available from the
Sun Blade 8000 P Modular System Documentation collection.

It provides overview material and instructions for installing, configuring, and administering the Sun Blade 8000 Modular System.
The documentation also includes procedures to install and replace components, and to diagnose system operations.

Information about the Sun Blade X8400 Server Module, the X8420 Server Module, the X8440 Server Module,
and the X8450 Server Module is also included.

The file 819-5846-15.zip includes a collection of HTML
files that comprise the Online Information System for the Sun Blade 8000
and Sun Blade 8000 P Modular Systems. To access the Online Information System in ZIP format, perform the following steps:

1. Click 819-5846-15.zip in the Link column to download the ZIP package.

2. Save the file to disk.

3. Unzip the file.
