Note: When installing an x86 Solaris Operating System without a monitor, keyboard and mouse, you must create a DCA(Device Configuration Assistant) diskette.  The Solaris x86 OS normally uses the keyboard and monitor as an input/output device.  By creating the diskette and editing bootenv.rc file, you can now redirect input and output to the serial port.
Use the following steps:
Step 1: Insert the Solaris 9 x86(or higher) number 2 CD into a unixed base system that has a floppy drive.
Step 2: cd into the following directory:
	# cd /cdrom/<Solaris 9 or higher>ia/<Solaris9 or higher>/Tools directory.  There is an image file called d1_image in this directory.
Step 3: Insert a blank floppy in the drive.
Step 4: Detect the new floppy media.
	# volcheck
Step 5: Format the floppy.
	# fdformat -d -U
Step 6: Copy the image file to the new floppy.
	#dd if=d1_image of=/vol/dev/aliases/floppy0 bs=36k
Step 7: Eject the floppy.
	# eject floppy
Step 8: Reinsert the floppy and redetect the new floppy with volcheck.  cd into the following directory:
# cd /floppy/floppy0/solaris
Step 9: Edit the bootenv.rc file and make the following changes.
	setprop input-device ttya
	setprop output-device ttya
Step 10: Now use the floppy with the Solaris x86 CD media to install the operating system.
Step 11: After completing the installation, make sure that the input-device and output-device is set to ttya.
	#eeprom input-device=ttya
	#eeprom output-device=ttya
If needed, change the baud rate in ttya-mode.  The default OS baud rate is 9600.
Linux OS Installation:
Note:  With Linux installations, you do not need to create the floppy to point to serial.  By the typing in any of the following commands, the input and output device will now go through the serial connection.	
	
Boot using the CD/DVD-ROM Linux media.  At the boot prompt of the Linux installation, type the following:
	linux console=ttyS0,9600
	or
	linux serial
	or
	linux console=tty0 console=ttyS0,9600
Step 12:  Make sure to install the NPS dependent packages for the operating system.  This will enable communication between the platform OS and the SP using the internal JNET network.
