Goal

What is the format of an MVC?

Solution

The Multi Volume Cartridge (MVC) used by VSM to store Virtual Tape Volume (VTV) data appears as a Standard User Label (SUL) tape if read on a tape drive attached to a native MVS or VM system.
Each VTV appears as one file on the MVC. The data portion of the VTV contains 32,768 byte fixed length records that are compressed track images of the data as it resided in the VTSS.

These files cannot be read by the host directly, the data has been compressed using the compression routines in the VTSS. The RTV utility can be used to create a real tape volume that contains the decompressed data.

Due to the record length of 32768, most standard MVS utilities will not copy an MVC, the maximum record length that can be specified is 32760.
