PreviouslyPublishedAs 228820 Description How to determine the size of physical disks used in the Sun StorEdge[TM] 5210 and 5310 NAS arrays Steps to Follow When a disk fails in these devices, and the customer has email notification set up, they will receive an email similar to the following: SYSTEM NOTIFICATION System : Sun Microsystems, Inc. StorEdge Model 5310 NAS Version : 5310 NAS 4.03 M0 (Build 16) Customer : xxxxx Contact Person : xxxxxxxxxx Contact Phone : xxxxxxxxxxxxx Location : (not configured) Serial Number : SE5310xxxxxxxxxx Host : nas [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] URL : http://customer_array Subsystem : RAID Severity : Critical Time Stamp : Wed Oct 12 13:58:26 2005 IP address of remote log file server: xxxxx Problem: Device in the channel 1 with target ID 7 in controller 0 & enclosure 0 row 0 column 6 has failed. Course of Action: 1. Failed device has to be replaced 2. Contact the Technical Support This email does not contain any information about the device that has failed. Determining the disk size for replacement can be done using one of two methods: 1. Send a 'diagnostic email' from the array, which contains all the technical information about the array. From your web browser, point at the IP address of the array. Log in and click the top third button (an envelope with an arrow pointing right). Enter some dummy text in the problem description. Enter the recipient's email address (including the @....). Click 'diagnostics' and then click the 'Add Items to List' icon to add the recipient to the list. Once this has been done, click 'send' to send an email. 2. Log into the array via telnet. Go to the main menu. Hit the space bar to scroll the entries under the 'Extensions' column until the 'Diagnostics' entry is visible. Select the item by entering the letter preceeding 'Diagnostics' ( typically X on the 5310 and W on the 5210 array ). This will take a while to gather, but will list all the diagnostic information on the screen, and if an SMTP server is configured, will give the option to email the information from the array. The generated output will look similar to the output below, when viewed via telnet.
