Goal

The goal of this how to is to assist field support in installing Oracle-Sun VTL patches from VTL Console GUI.

NOTE: Applying patches via VTL Console GUI is recommended only if one patch (or just a few patches) are to be applied and the patches are "non-disruptive" (e.g., no restart of VTL services or reboot of VTL server is required). See doc id 1016196.1 for commandline process.

Solution

1. Obtain VTL patch

Approved VTL server patches are available at the USR (Universal Software Repository) web site.
Search on "vtl" or on specific Build number (i.e., "1656"), to locate the build for VTL server you are patching.

Download patch(es) required.

2. Take Xray

Before applying patches run Xray and offload to safe place (do not store on VTL server itself).
NOTE: Also recommend to run Xray after patch install to record successful patch install.

3. Apply patch

Note: If failover configuration (HA), suspend failover on both nodes to avoid failover during patch process.

Download/transfer patch to workstation VTL Console is on and note directory path where patch is downloaded to.
From Console, highlight server name and select 'Tools' (from Tool bar on top of screen), then select 'Add Patch'.
Select location of patch (from step 1), highlight it and press 'OK'
Restart VTL services (from Console, right click on server name, select 'System Maintenance', then 'Restart VTL')
To verify patch has been applied, select 'Version Info' tab on right side of Console screen (while server name is still highlighted).

NOTE: The VTL server does not report back to GUI if the patch install fails, it just won't show in the Version Info tab. Because of this lack of error reporting from GUI and that only one patch can be done at a time through GUI, the recommended procedure is to install VTL patches via the VTL command line (refer to Knowledge article #1016196.1 for command line procedure).
