Goal

Can a 9840 cartridge that has been initialized in 3590 mode be used as an MVC?

Solution

Answer: Yes but with restrictions.
1. The cartridge needs to be new(never has been mounted on a 3590 device) or just has been re-initilized.
2. The first command sent to the MVC by the VSM solution is a write command.
The reason for these restrictions is the write to an empty cartridge will flip the cartridge to a 3490 type.
WARNING: If you try to run an audit(read) on the cartridge, the 9840 will reject the cartridge as an incompatible media type.

The exact bit being flipped is block ID bit.
3590 supports a 32 bit block ID field.
3490 supports a 22 bit block ID field.
