Goal

Provide customers and Oracle field support with procedure for replacing a physical tape drive attached to backend of VTL server.

Solution

Procedure to replace a failed physical drive:
  1. Verify the failed physical tape drive is not in use: there aren't migrations virtual-to-physical, direct access, etc...
  2. Unassign the failed physical tape drive under the Physical Tape Library tree in the VTL Console GUI.
  3. Discharge the failed physical tape drive on the HBA to delete all references to wwpn, serial number and ACSLS position of the failed tape drive. Doing this discharge, you will avoid restart VTL Service.
  4. Replace the failed physical tape drive: the new tape drive will have new wwpn and new serial number.
  5.  If ACSLS is in configuration, reconfigure ACSLS database to update the new parameters from the new physical tape drive (wwpn, serial number): /"config drive panel_id/" where panel_id for L700 will be 0,0,0.
Note: Doing this reconfiguration, you will avoid restarting ACSLS.
  6. Rescan the HBA via VTL Console GUI
  7. Enlist the new physical tape drive.
  8. Assign the new physical tape drive on the physical tape library (the new physical tape drive will now have new wwpn, new serial number and same ACSLS position).
