Goal

Older Oracle/StorageTek[TM] C4 Tape Libraries have a defective tape storage magazine that causes tapes to not be completely inserted into the storage slot.

When that happens the robot can hit the projecting tape and derail.

Solution

Steps to Follow
The magazine detent force in some early Oracle/StorageTek C4 Tape Library products is too high causing it to get (2212) and put (2281) errors. When this happens the tapes can get dropped by the hand, or not inserted fully into the tape magazine.
Impact

The impact is low, as no customer data is affected and the probability of this happening is relatively low.

Remedial Actions

The vendor modified the Oracle/StorageTek C4 Tape Library firmware in revision V14 to better handle excessive magazine detent force.  Be sure units in the field have revision V14 or greater installed.

Second, replace the tape magazine if it is not up to current specifications.  Any magazine without a serial number label is not up to current specifications and could be subject to this issue. See the attached picture for a photo of a magazine with the serial number that indicates it is a current version. Order the below parts depending on the tape drive in use:

SG-XMAGLTO-C-Z 380-1392 LTO Magazine (18-cartridge slots)

SG-XMAGSDLT-C-Z 380-1393 SDLT Magazine (15-cartridge slots)

Dates Effected

The vendor has modified the magazine racks to correct the issue starting in March 2006.

Known failures were built in February 2006 or before.
