Description

Customers who have purchased 72GB 15K RPM disk drives will find that they are only able to create 5 OPEN-L LDEVs on a 3D+1P parity group, which is fewer than the 6 OPEN-L LDEVs you'll get on 72GB 10K RPM disk drives in 3D+1P. This is a limitation of the 15K RPM drives.

Steps to Follow

When creating OPEN-L LDEVs over a 3D+1P parity group, there is a difference in the number of LDEVs that can be created on the 10K RPM 72 GB drives VS. the 15K RPM 72 GB drives. Over the 10K RPM drives, you will be able to create 6 complete OPEN-L LDEVs, whereas with the 15K RPM drives you will only be able to create 5 OPEN-L LDEVs. This may be a surprise to customers who would expect the following yield based on this equation:

(3x72GB drives)/(36GB OPEN-L)= 6 LDEVs

This equation works for the 10K RPM drives, but with the 15K RPM drives there is not sufficient space for the final LDEV. The remaining space can be converted into a CVS LDEV, but it will not be the full capacity of the OPEN-L LDEV.

In addition, it should also be noted that there is a LDEV count discrepancy between 10K and 15K RPM drives for other emulations besides OPEN-L . Those totals are as follows:

EMULATION 10K disk 15K disk
OPEN-3 88 86
OPEN-9 29 28
OPEN-E 15 14
OPEN-L 6 5

The following are the Sun and Hitachi part numbers for the drives discussed above:

Comment: The Sun System Handbook describes this as a 73GB HDD, while the SE9980 Parts Catalog Maintenance Manual lists the following details for the HDD:

HDU450-72K1FC - DKS2C-K72FC - 5518492-A

In either case this is the same HDD, while the description states 73 the HDD is configured as a 72 GB HDD when installed with the DKS2C-K72FC type on the array.

Comment: Returning to Tech Review for clarification. The document refers to 72GB 10K RPM drives, yet in the table of part numbers these are referred to as 73GB drives. Please clarify. Thanks.

Comment: Hello,

I've made the changes you suggested. Thank you for the feedback, I agree that mentioning the other emulation discrepancies is worthwhile. Please let me know if you feel it needs anything else.

Thanks!

Comment: Hi Aren,

I think it's worth mentioning that the same problem is seen with OPEN-3, OPEN-9 and OPEN-Es:

OPEN-3 - 88 vs 86
OPEN-9 - 29 vs 28
OPEN-E - 51 vs 14

Otherwise, looks fine.

Regards,

John
