Goal

If a tape becomes stuck in a Sun StorEdge[TM] L8 tape library and the normal panel operations do not cause it to eject, it may still be possible to manually eject the tape from the drive.

Solution

Steps to Follow
Refer to the following information for resolution:

The Sun StorEdge L8 tape library metallic cover must be removed to access the internal tape drive. There is a small window on the right side of the Sun StorEdge L8 (when you face the tape drive intake). It gives access to a wheel. If one of the 8 cartridge carriers is facing the tape drive window opening, it will have to be removed it before you can access the wheel. Turn the wheel in a back to front motion for about 15 "shots". The cartridge should move up and out. Remove the released cartridge by hand and discard it (usually a visual inspection will show physical damage). If the tape drive is sent back for repair and the customer does not have security concerns with the data on the media, send it back with the FRU (Field Replacement Unit).

The Sun StorEdge L8 Tape Autoloader User's Guide (6-00522-01) contains instructions on how to remove stuck tapes (see Troubleshooting and Diagnostics) but when it comes to the drive itself, it says to contact your service representative. There are other, more useful, procedures in this document.
