Goal

Converting a Sun Fire[TM] 6800 or E6900 platform from a single segment/single domain configuration into a dual segment/dual domain configuration.

Current Configuration:

  • Single Segment
  • Domain A: SB0, SB1, SB2, SB3, SB4, SB5, IB6, IB7, IB8, IB9
  • Assuming boot device is located in either IB6 or IB8
  • Assuming resources in IB7 and IB9 are not required for Domain A

Desired Configuration:

  • Dual Segment
  • Domain A: SB0, SB2, SB4, IB6, IB8
  • Domain C: SB1, SB3, SB5, IB7, IB9

Solution

Items to keep in mind:

  • I/O should be split between remaining I/O boats for redundancy
  • Another boot device (D130/D240) should be available
  • Being able to utilize one side of each D240/D130 for mirroring of OS
  • Application on Domain A will not overload a smaller configuration

Procedure:

  1. Schedule down time for "Domain A"
  2. Verify changes been made to "Domain A" OS/Applications to not utilize IB7 and IB9
  3. Connect to the system controller and enter the platform shell
  4. Transition to Domain A by using the "console a" command
  5. Log into the domain and bring down OS
  6. After the OS was down, use the escape sequences to transition back to the domain shell level
  7. Issue a "setkeyswitch off" command
  8. Transition back to the platform shell by using the "disconnect" command
  9. Configure platform for dual partition using the "setupplatform" command
  10. Reassign the boards for Domain C utilizing the "deleteboard" and "addboard" commands. The following boards should be moved from Domain A: SB1 SB3 SB5 IB7 IB9
  11. Transition to Domain A by using the "console a" command
  12. Bring the OS back up by issuing a "setkeyswitch on" command
  13. Verify that OS/Applications function with IB6 and IB8 resrouces only
  14. Utilize the escape sequences to transition back to the domain shell and then "disconnect" to get back to the platform shell
  15. Transition to Domain C by using the "console c" command
  16. Provide setup infomation by issuing the "setupdomain" command
  17. Attach appropriate devices to IB7 and IB9 (e.g. boot device & network cable)
  18. When prepared, use the command "setkeyswitch on"
  19. Install appropriate OS/Applications from the 'ok' prompt
