Solution

Steps to Follow
How do I replace the backup battery on the REM (RAID Expansion Module) in the X6250 Server Module?

Note: Always refer to the X6250 Server Module Service Manual #820-1185-XX at http://docs.sun.com/ for the latest updated procedures and ESD protection standards.

Caution: When removing a server module, install a slot filler within one minute to avoid adjacent modules from overheating.

Tools

  • Antistatic wrist strap
  • #2 Phillips head screwdriver

Assumptions

  • The server module OS has been shut down, the module has been powered off, and the server module is lying on an anti-static mat.

Replacement Steps

Caution: Before handling internal components of the server module, attach an electrostatic-discharge (ESD) wrist strap to the grounding post that is built into the rear of the chassis. The system's printed circuit boards and hard disk drives contain components that are extremely sensitive to static electricity.

1. Remove the top cover of the server module.

A. Press down on the cover release button and, using the indent for leverage, slide the main cover toward the rear of the server module approximately 0.5 inches (12mm).

B. Grasp the cover by it's rear edge and lift it straight up from the module.

2. Remove the REM.

A. Disengage the REM connector from the motherboard by pulling up on the connector side of the module.

B. Once the connector is free pull the REM away from the motherboard support bracket at an upward angle.

C. Turn the REM board over as the battery is located on the underside of the REM board.

D. Unfasten the connector between the battery and the REM board.

E. Disconnect the battery cable from the REM.

F. Remove the four screws that secure the REM battery to the REM board.

G. Lift the battery away from the REM board.

3. Install the REM battery.

A. To install the new battery, reverse Steps 2C through 2G above.

4. Install the replacement REM.

A. Turn the REM over so that its circuit side faces the motherboard and the REM connector is on the same side as its motherboard connector.

B. Angle the back end of the REM into the support bracket.

C. Press the REM connector to the motherboard connector carefully.

D. Push down on the connector until the connector is fully engaged.

5. Once the REM has been replaced reinstall the top cover.

A. Align the top cover with the guide notches and place flat on the server module.

B. Slide the top cover forward until the cover release button clicks in place with the locking mechanism.
