Description
Active Directory is the Windows 2000/2003 directory service that provides centralized access to domain resources such as users, groups, and shared data.

The Sun StorageTek[TM] 5210/5310/5310C/5320 NAS Appliance and Gateway System acquires users and groups from other sources, so the system ADS support essentially consists of making shares available through ADS. ADS relies on the Internet domain name service (DNS) to provide name resolution services. The DNS provided with ADS enables clients to dynamically update their entries in the DNS database, which is known as dynamic DNS.

Steps to Follow
To configure ADS, proceed as follows:

  1. Access the system through Telnet or serial console.
  2. Press Enter at the [menu] prompt and enter the administrator password.
  3. Press the spacebar until ADS setup displays under Extensions at the lower right.
  4. Select the letter corresponding to ADS setup. There you see a list of options for both active directory setup:
  • Enable ? Enable ADS.
  • ADS Domain ? The name of the Windows domain.
  • User ? A Windows user account name with rights to update ADS
  • Password ? Password for this account.
  • User Container ? The ADS container that is the location of the user account.
  • (LDAP distinguished name, without domain, for example, ou=users)
  • ADS Site ? Enter the local ADS site if different from ADS domain. Usually left blank.
  • Kerberos Realm ? Name of Kerberos realm for secure ADS and DNS, usually the ADS domain name.
  • KDC Server ? Host name for Key Distribution Center server, usually a domain controller. (This field can usually be left blank because it can normally be resolved by DNS.)

The ADS configuration must be in place before configuring Dynamic DNS. To configure dynamic DNS, proceed as follows:

  1. Return to the main menu by pressing the Esc key.
  2. Select option H, DNS & Syslogd.
  3. Select option 1, Edit Fields.
  4. Use the Enter or Tab key to navigate through the fields.
  5. Ensure that standard DNS is set up, with a domain name and servers configured.
  6. Select option Y for ?Yes? to enable Dynamic DNS.
  7. Enter a user name and password with sufficient rights to perform secure DNS updates.
  8. After configuring desired options, select option 7, Save Changes.

After you have successfully configured these settings, you are able to publish shares to ADS using the SMB/CIFS shares menu. Refer to the FAQ ?How do I share files with SMB users? / How do I create SMB shares?? on page 134 for details on this procedure. This functionality is also available through the Web Admin GUI.

  1. To use the Web Admin, connect with a Web browser to http://hostname or the IP address of your system.
  2. Click Grant or Yes to accept any Java software authorization windows, and you reach the login screen.
  3. Type the administrator password to access the administration interface.
  4. Navigate to Windows Configuration/Configure Domains and Workgroups.
