Goal

Description
This document is intended to aid in the troubleshooting of the L20/40/60 tape libraries.

This library has a network interface, and one can do almost as much thru a web brower as thru the front panel of the library.  Also, the documentation on this library doesn't seem to give a lot beyond what the library itself gives, so the following guidelines will allow an engineer to diagnose this library remotely based on what the library is reporting.  In some cases, the error logs include codes for possible components, and the code table below lists those.

Common tasks include:

  • Running an error report

  • Upgrading library firmware  (commonly needed after replacing components)

  • Checking firmware revisions

  • Run diagnostics

  • Identifying failed fru codes

Solution

Steps to Follow
In order to administer the L20/40/60 via web interface, it must be put on the network first. That will require access thru the library's four button front panel menu:

    1. Connect to the network port of the card using a category 5 ethernet cable.

    2.  On the library's back panel, verify that the link LED on the remote management card is green. If the LED is not green, a link has not been established with the local network.

    3. Enter the Network Access menu.

      Main Menu ->

             Administration ->

                    Change Configuration ->

                            Network Access

    4. If you would like to use DHCP/BOOTP to configure the remote management card, select [Yes]. A message will display to confirm the configuration through DHCP/BOOTP or alert you if DHCP/BOOTP failed.

      If successful, note the IP address, and skip to step 9.   Otherwise,  obtain an IP address, subnet mask, and gateway address, and continue with the next step.

    5. Enter the IP Address. Use the [+] key to change the number. Use the [->] key to move to the next number. Use the [Down] key to move to the next address.

    6. Enter the subnet mask using the same procedure.

    7. Enter the subnet mask using the same procedure.

    8. Press [OK] when complete to save the changes, or press [Quit] to exit the menu and not save the changes. A message will display to confirm the changes you have entered, or alert you if the changes have not been saved.

    9. Point a web brower at the IP address from Step 4.

At this point, you (or customer) will be able to do most everything needed including:

  • running an error report

  • upgrading library firmware  (commonly needed after replacing picker, remote management card, or library controller)

  • checking firmware revisions

  • run diagnostics

NOTE: The GUI interface may be a bit different depending on the firmware

      level present on the RMC card but most people should be able to follow

      the steps below.

To run an error report:

  1. Enter the designated IP web browser

  2. Select the [Report] tab.

  3. Save the report to a file using your browser's  Save Page As  feature.  A sample report is included at the bottom of this document.  The library it came from was suffering from a drive failure.

To download library firmware:

  1. Uncompress the library firmware Patch ID: 111972 , and note it's location on your local system.

  2. Assuming library is configured for network access, enter the IP address within your web browser to launch the Web-Based Library Administrator pages.

  3. Select the [Configuration] tab from the main screen.

  4. Select the [Firmware Download] button.

  5. Enter the full pathname for the download file, or use the [Browse] button to locate the file.  See patch README for more details.

To check firmware level:

  1. Enter the designated IP address into the web browser to launch the Web-Based Library Administrator pages .

  2. Select the [Report] tab.

  3. Scroll down to the Firmware Revisions section of the page to view your library and drive firmware revisions.  The library below is at 1.33.S.

To run diagnostics:

  1. Enter the designated IP address into the web browser to launch the Web-Based Library Administrator pages .

  2. Select the [Diagnostics] tab.

  3. From here, you can run several diagnostics tests such as horizontal movement, vertical movement,  the wellness test, and more.   The wellness test is reasonable test of the overall health of the library.  The L20 in the report below was failing the wellness test until drive 1 was replaced, then it passed several wellness tests in a row.   A single wellness test can take 7-10 minutes, or more, depending on the size of  the library.

The Library Hard Error Log on the report page (example below) often will call out potential FRU's by number.  This table shows what those components are.
