Description
On the StorEdge[TM] 99x0 series storage arrays, host modes are defined depending on the operating system that will be accessing the LUNs.

On the 9910 and 9960 arrays, the host mode is defined per port. For the 9970, 9980 and 9990, the host mode is defined per host group on the port. The path from the host needs to be offline (no I/O activity), so, generally, you need to shutdown the host before you change Host Mode. Host modes cause host reserves to be handled differently, implement special host functions, or support host commands differently. And since it cannot be known what operations the host is performing during the change, it was designed to be performed when the host is not accessing the LUNs.

Host mode 00 will be used for Linux, SGI IRIX, and NetApp Gateway Filers (gFiler).
The difference between 03 and 08 is that 03 allows for more than 8 luns per target on the HP-UX host.
Mode 08 is not applicable to the V series arrays (9970 and 9980), mode 03 would be used for HP-UX hosts.
VMWare ESX requires host mode 0A.
0C is required for support of MSCS (cluster) failover and to recognize more than 8 luns.
Host Mode 2C is for WindowsNT/2000 host expansion mode (Online LUSE).

The host mode can be set from the Remote Console, HiCommand and in Storage Navigator.

Storage Navigator (9970 /9980/9990): click on the second icon down on the left of the screen which will be LUN Management / LUN Security. In the LUN Manager tab, expand the view of the fibre ports to see host group(s) in it, click on the desired group to change the host group to the correct host mode.

Remote Console (9910 / 9960): choose the LUN Manager button from the main window, then in the SCSI PATH tab, you will see s 'Host Mode' button.

HiCommand: in the Physical View tab, select the desired array then port to open the 'Port Information' panel where the Host Mode field will be available for modification.

These host modes are defined, but not for customer use:

0D IO Trace mode

 0E HI-UX (Hitachi HP-UX) mode

0E and 1E are Internal Hitachi modes and shouldn't be confused
with standard HP-UX. This host mode wouldn't be used outside
Hitachi and should not be implemented at customer sites.

The host modes can also be changed from the SVP (Modify
Mode->Install->Change Configuration->SCSI I/F
Configuration->Host Mode button). Since the SVP is a tool
reserved for onsite engineers, customers should always use one of
the above methods.
