Goal

Sun StorageTek[TM] SL8500 Modular Library System, FRS_3.02 SNMP Support

Library Code FRS_3.02 provides support for SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol). SNMP allows a Network Manager Station to query the SL8500 for configuration information and status. SNMP can also send information in the form of traps to alert the customer of potential problems. This feature is disabled by default and must be enabled through the CLI port and the MIB file can be captured via SLC at version FRS_2.95 and above.

Solution

Steps to Follow:
FRS_3.02 SNMP Support
Library Code FRS_3.02 provides support for SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol). SNMP allows a Network Manager Station to query the SL8500 for configuration information and status. SNMP can also send information in the form of traps to alert the customer of potential problems. This feature is disabled by default and must be enabled through the CLI port and the MIB file can be captured via SLC at version FRS_2.95 and above.

Full SNMP support is planned to be released

Phase 1 Support with FRS_3.02:

 -Enable/Disable SNMP from CLI.
-User and trap recipient management from CLI.
-Sending Error, Warning, and slTrapAgentStart V2c and V3 traps.
-Supports MIB2 V2c/V3 gets.
-SLC Support to download the MIB text file.
-Supports the following STK MIB variables:
slLibStkBaseModel
slLibSerialNumber
WWNNumber
slLibraryTopLevelCondition
slLibLocatContact
slLibLocatStreet
slLibLocatState
slLibLocatZip
slLibLocatCountry
slLibLocatDescr
slLibLocatCity
slLibDateString

Note:

When upgrading from a version of library software that does not support SNMP to a version that does support SNMP, a second code activation is required to get the SNMP system properly initialized.

Limitations:

-SNMP V3 AES support is not enabled.
-SNMP hostName is not currently supported for "snmp addTrapRecipient".
-For the "snmp enable port" command only the port_2B and port_1A are currently supported. Note: 2B is the host port and 1A is the ILC port occasionally used for a private LAN connection to SDP. The 1A port can not be used for the host connection or third party Network Management Stations.
-SNMP v3 traps may not work with all vendors SNMP V3 protocol stacks. There is a problem with the USM (User Security Model) portion of the SL8500 V3 traps. Current work around is to use V2 traps or a different V3 stack.

SDP code support to use SNMP traps for call home functionality is currently in SDP EVT and is expected to be released in mid July 2006. It will require an update to the SL8500 Library Code. The associated Library Code will be the next release after FRS_3.02b. Monitor the SDP support site for updated information on SDP SL8500 support @ http://intwww.stortek.com/02/SDP.html or contact the SDP support desk.

There are several recoverable events noted in the SL8500 log that has the potential to generate traps. Recommend the MIB variable "slLibraryTopLevelCondition" be queried after receiving an alert to determine the current state of the SL8500. The site may also want to consider not enabling traps for warning events which are recoverable events.

An example pasted below is an error event that typically does not impact customer operations. This event indicates the Library Controller was requested to dismount a mounted cartridge and is usually re-driven by the library manager such as HSC.:

Refer to the latest edition of the SL8500 installation manual for details on the installation and configuration variables for SL8500 SNMP support.
