Solution Type Technical Instruction Sure Solution 1008493.1 : Sun StorageTek[TM] 5310/5210/5320/5220 NAS Appliance: Verifying drive status
PreviouslyPublishedAs 211612 Description This document helps in confirming whether all the new and existing drives are online and configured. Steps to Follow Sun StorageTek[TM] 5310/5210/5320/5220 NAS Appliance: Verifying drive status StorageTek[TM] 5320 NAS Appliance There are two FC array RAID storage units that can be used with this NAS appliance today. The first is the CSM1 5300 RAID EU and the second is the CSM2 5320 RAID EU storage for FC environments. These enclosures support two controller modules each. The Model 2882 (CSM1) and Model 3992 (CSM2) The second FC storage type unit used with this NAS appliance is called the expansion unit, designated EU-F, and there is a CSM1 and CSM2 version and both attach to the RAID EU. The CSM1 5300 RAID EU and the CSM1 EU-F both support 14 drives within each of their enclosures. The 5300 RAID EU supports up to seven FC expansion units for a total of 112 FC drives. The CSM2 5320 RAID EU and the CSM2 EU-F both support 16 drives within each of their enclosures. The 5320 RAID EU supports up to six FC expansion units for a total of 112 FC drives. Drive faceplates CSM1/2 - Labeled FC, SATA or Filler (If the CSM1 5300 RAID EU is used in a SATA setup, the drive faceplates are labeled 'FILLER') The CSM1 5300 RAID EU does not support SATA drives and so when this module is used with a SATA configuration there are no drives installed in the CSM1 RAID EU module. The CSM2 was designed to work with the SATA drives so today when using the CSM2 5320 RAID EU module you can have SATA or FC drives installed. You cannot mix SATA and FC in any CSM1 or 2 module though, it's either all SATA or all FC. Today we cannot mix the CSM1 5300 RAID EU with CSM2 EU's. We can only attach the matched CSM1 SATA expansion unit with the CSM1 5300 RAID EU for a CSM1 SATA Array configuration. The CSM2 5320 RAID EU can be mixed with CSM2 FC or SATA EUs only. The following describes the Sun StorageTek 5320 NAS Appliance FC and SATA differences: Fibre Channel There are two types of FC drives supported by the CSM1 trays today, 146 gigabyte drives and 300 gigabyte drives both at 10K RPMs. There are currently no limitations with the Fibre Channel back-end with 14 - 146 or 300 gigabyte drives per tray, with two hot spares* in the controller tray. The controller tray, with it's two hot spares is configured with two Volume Groups of RAID5 5+1. The EU-Fs (FC expansion units) with 14 - 146 or 300GB drives, and no hot spares, are configured for two Volume Groups of RAID5 6+1. The CSM1 setup has two hot spares in the RAID EU only. The CSM2 setup with 300GB Drives has one hot spare per tray. SATA Uses a 400 gigabyte drive at 7200 RPMs. Limitations. The maximum size for a LUN (also referred to as a volume group or RAID set) is two terabytes. In the CSM1 the controller tray is diskless, the first EU-S (SATA Expansion Unit) is configured with two hot spares and two Volume Groups of RAID5 5+1 which are then configured for two equal sized Volumes per Volume Group. So you end up with the following, on the first SATA tray, two hot spares two volume groups and on the remaining EU-S trays you end up with two Volume Groups and four Volumes, two per Volume Group and no hot spares CSM2 Drive LEDs Service Action Allowed - Service Action required - OK - CSM1 Drive LEDs Active LED - Fault LED - Off - normal status and drive is functioning normally StorageTek 5220 NAS Appliance Uses a CSM2 tray. Please refer to the information above for CSM2 tray drive leds. The tray contains SATA drives. StorageTek 5310/5210 NAS Appliance Front Panel LEDs Hard Disk Drive Activity - Colour Green -The Drive Activity LED on the front panel is used to indicate drive activity from the onboard SCSI controller. The server Main Board also provides a header, giving access to this LED for add-in IDE or SCSI controllers.
Failed drives are usually evident by the following:
Through the StorEdge Web Administrator, check the drive status. Functional drives have a green LED displayed beside them. The failed drive will have a red LED. Replace the failed drive. Additional notes applicable for all the NAS Appliances Using the WEBadmin RAID/Manage RAID menu, verify by selecting individual luns if the configured drives are correct and as displayed. Sometimes, it has been seen, that a drive may be un-configurable for some reason. Either initialize it through NRM or replace such a drive. Contact Sun Support to do so. If a drive is offline, check if the volume of which it is a part of , has been made offline. This can be found effectively using NRM. Contact Sun Support to do so. It is important to determine the reason for the drive becoming offline to avoid data corruption.
