Solution Type Technical Instruction Sure Solution 1007590.1 : Sun StorEdge[TM] T3, T3+, and 6x20 Arrays: Some Precautions For Upgrading
PreviouslyPublishedAs 210501 Description This Technical Instruction applies to the following arrays: Sun StorEdge[TM] T3 Sun StorEdge[TM] T3+ Sun StorEdge[TM] 6x20 You know that all I/O to the array should be stopped while carrying out a disk firmware upgrade. However, in spite of this precaution, there have been cases in which the upgrade was not successful. This article lists some additional precautions that you can take to make the disk firmware upgrade successful. Steps to Follow The main reason for the disk firmware upgrade to be unsuccessful even with no host I/O, is the "vol verify" or the "disk scrubber," which may still be running in the background within the array. This "vol verify" or "disk scrubber" is internal to the array; you can run it manually or automatically (for 3.x firmware onwards) by setting a parameter within the array. To be certain that the disk firmware upgrade proceeds without any problems, check for the following: 1. Check to make sure that "vol verify" is not running by running "proc list." 2. If "vol verify" is running, wait until it is completed. Do not kill the verify process. 3. If you are on T3+ or 6x20 running 3.x firmware, turn off the disk scrubber, which is an enhancement in the T3 firmware that runs in the background. It is similar to "vol verify." Use the following command to turn off the disk scrubber: sys disk_scrubber off 4. It is also possible that Storade[TM] may have been scheduled to run "vol verify" during the disk firmware upgrade. Ensure that this schedule is stopped and that Storade doesn't start "vol verify." 5. Lastly, from firmware 3.1.x onwards, you may have "ondg befit" running. Turn off the ondg with "sys ondg off." Once you have completed all of the steps, you can be fairly certain that there is no more disk activity. You can proceed to upgrade the disk firmware without any problems. When the firmware upgrade is done, enable disk_scrubber and ondg once again. For example: sys disk_scrubber on sys ondg befit If you disabled Storade, you will need to re-enable that as well. Note 2: Similar problems can also occur while upgrading the T3 firmware (and not the disk firmware). Please see bug 4985085, which was fixed in the 3.1.4 firmware upgrade. vol-verify, disk_scrubber, T3, T3+, T3B, disk, firmware, upgrade, download Previously Published As 77343 Change History Date: 2006-01-23 User Name: 71396 Action: Update Canceled Comment: *** Restored Published Content *** from ssh audit update Version: 0 Date: 2006-01-23 User Name: 71396 Action: Update Started Comment: updating per ssh audit Version: 0 Date: 2005-09-02 Attachments This solution has no attachment |
