Goal
DescriptionThe SP gets into an unknown state and you are required to reset the SP back to its unconfigured, factor default state.
This howto explains the steps needed to perform a factory default reset.
Solution
Steps to FollowHow to reset the Service Processor (SP) to factory defaults:
1. Connect to the serial port (DB9) on the unit with a null-modem serial cable.
This can be done with a PC running Windows using the "hyperterm" program,
on linux by using a program such as "cu" or on Solaris with a program such
as "tip".
Note: On V20z you will need to set Jumper19(J19) on your motherboard, to ensure SP access to the Serial Port.
J19 is located nearer to the 66MHz PCIX slot on the left hand side(when viewing machine from the rear)
You can locate the J19 from the manual "Sun Fire[TM] V20z and Sun Fire [TM] V40z Servers - User Guide" found in the Legacy X86 Servers area of OTN
Note that the manual states J19 has 3 pins but it only has two - refer to guide
on inside of server lid
2. Use 115200 as the baud rate. If needed, use Data Bits: 8, Parity: None,
stop Bits: 1. For Flow Control, choose the correct setting for your
configuration (either hardware or software -- either should work).
3. Reboot the Service Processor by pressing the the reset button on the back of
the unit. On the V20z and V40z it is marked "//", or on the V40z it can be
marked with a symbol that looks like the registered trademark symbol, an "R"
inside of a small circle.
You will see the SP boot process, similar to this:
CPU: XPC860xxZPnnD4 at 64 MHz: 4 kB I-Cache 4 kB D-Cache FEC present
Board: Service Processor Stage 1 - Rev. 0
DRAM: 64 MB
FLASH: 16 MB
In: serial
Out: serial
Err: serial
Product_ID = 0xff (255)
PPCBOOT revision = V2.1.0.16
Board_Revision = 0x05 (5)
PRS revision = 0x5c (92)
Hit any key to stop autoboot: 4
Hit any key to stop autoboot: 3
Hit any key to stop autoboot: 2
Hit any key to stop autoboot: 1
4. Press a key to interrupt the boot process. You must do so within the four
second countdown. If done correctly, you will see the following prompt:
=>
5. At the prompt, type:
spfactory
6. There will be a short pause, then the prompt again. At the prompt, type:
reset
7. The SP has now been reset to factory defaults and must be configured again.
Refer to "Initial Setup of the Service Processor"in Chapter 1 of the Server
Management Guide which you can find on the link below:
