SolutionSteps to FollowImplement all the usual anti-static-discharge methods... * Prepare an antistatic surface to set parts on during the removal, installation, or replacement process. * Place ESD-sensitive components such as the printed circuit boards on an antistatic mat. The following items can be used as an antistatic mat: o Antistatic bag used to wrap a the Sun FRU/CRU to be returned to Sun. o Sun ESD mat, part number 250-1088 o A disposable ESD mat (shipped with some replacement parts or optional system components) * Attach an antistatic wrist strap. When servicing or removing server components attach an antistatic strap to your wrist and then to a metal area on the chassis. HOT SWAPPING A FAN MODULE The following LEDs are lit when a fan module fault is detected: * Front and rear Service Required LEDs * Top Fan LED on the front of the server * Fan Fault LED on or adjacent to the faulty fan module inside the system, under the Top Cover Door That's under the hinged door of the Top Cover (the one which you lift in order to replace Fan Modules, not under the main top cover. If an over temperature conditions occurs, one cause being multiple fan modules failing, the front panel CPU over temperature LED will also light and a message is displayed on the console and logged by the Service Processor. If that occurs do look for the Top Fan LED on the front of the serer. Could be that there has been a multiple fan modules failure. If the Top Fan LED is lit, you can open the Top Cover Door and look for a Fan Fault LED(s) lit. If remote from the system, you can also map fan module locations to Service Processor alerts using the following table.. Tip: You can use the Service Processor's showfaults command at the sc> prompt to view the current faults. T5120 Fan Module Locations (looking from the front of the system) and FRU Names ... /SYS/FANBD1/FM0 /SYS/FANBD1/FM1 /SYS/FANBD1/FM2 (Empty) (Empty) /SYS/FANBD0/FM1 (Empty) (Empty) To ensure proper system cooling of the T5120, the fan modules must be positioned as shown in the above table. T5220 Fan Module Locations (looking from the front of the system) and FRU Names ... (Empty) (Empty) (Empty /SYS/FANBD0/FM0 /SYS/FANBD0/FM1 /SYS/FANBD0/FM2 << NOTE: D1 changed to D0 (That Agrees with the Service Manual) To ensure proper system cooling of the T5220, the fan modules must be positioned as shown in the above table. NOTE: as of today, Dec 11, 2007, the T5120/5220 Service Manual has an incorrect presentation for T5220 Fan Module locations. Sun Tech Writing will make the correction in the next release of that manual. Release date not known at this time. The table above is correct. REMOVING A FAN MODULE 1. If the server is in a rack, extend the server on the rails into the maintenance position, at least far enough to be able to open and swing back the Top Cover Door into a stable position. 2. Slide back the Top Cover Door latch, and open the top cover door and swing it back into a stable position. NOTE: The system may start to overheat if the top cover door is left open for more than 60 seconds. 3. The faulty fan module is identified with a corresponding Fault LED. On the T5120, the Fan Fault LEDs are located on the fan board. On the T5220, there ias a Fault LED ON each Fan Modules. 4. Pull upon the green fan module label until the fan module is removed from the chassis. INSTALLING A FAN MODULE CAUTION: To ensure proper system cooling, do not install a replacement fan module anywhere other than in the affected slots. When the replacement is complete the fan modules locations need to match that in the tables above. 1. With the top cover DOOR open, install the replacement fan module into the server. The fan modules are keyed to ensure they are installed in the correct orientation. 2. Apply firm pressure to fully seat the fan module. AND, press down on the adjacent fan module(s) to be sure that they are also fully seated. 3. Verify that the Fan Fault LED on the replaced fan module or adjacent to it on the Fan Board is not lit. 4. Close the top cover door. 5. Verify that the system Fan Fault LED, and Service Required LEDs, are not lit. In addition, use the Service Processor's sc> showfaults command to verify proper operation.
