Goal

2GB DIMMs or USIV+ 1.8GHz system boards require the A196 Power Supply in 15K/25K

Solution

Please review the following information.

A141 is part number 300-1413 and supplies 4.0KW maximum power.
A196 is part number 300-1705 and supplies 4.7KW maximum power.
A196 (RoHS:YL) is part number 300-1917 and supplies 4.7KW maximum power.

F12K and E20K Platforms: USIV+ 1.8GHz and 2GB DIMMs are fully supported on current A141-based systems. No A196 upgrade is required.

F15K and E25K Platforms: Insertion of any 2GB DIMMs or USIV+ 1.8GHz system boards require the presence of six A196 (300-1705 or 300-1917) power supplies. Power supply upgrade should be completed prior to DIMM or system board insertion.

NOTE 1: F12K and F15K platforms require the carrier plate upgrade for 1.2GHz and faster processor speeds.
NOTE 2: E20K and E25K platforms manufactured prior to August 2005 were built with A141 power supplies.
NOTE 3: 2GB DIMMs are supported only on V3CPU boards.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: How do I determine if the platform contains A196 power supplies?

A: Run the SMS showenvironment -p powers command on the Main system controller. Output will indicate 'PS at' for an A141 power supply. Output will indicate 'PS-A196 at' as shown in the example below:

POWER UNIT AC0 AC1 DC0 DC1 FAN0 FAN1
----- ---- --- --- --- --- ---- ----
PS-A196 at PS0 OK OK OK ON ON OK OK
PS-A196 at PS1 OK OK OK ON ON OK OK
PS-A196 at PS2 OK OK OK ON ON OK OK
PS-A196 at PS3 OK OK OK ON ON OK OK
PS-A196 at PS4 OK OK OK ON ON OK OK
PS-A196 at PS5 OK OK OK ON ON OK OK

This output is also available in the Explorer f15k/showenvironment.out file.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Power supplies are hot-swappable and no platform outage is required. Follow the replacement procedure documented in the Systsem Service Manual. SMS will operate the A196 as an A141 until all six power supplies are swapped. The A196 requires both AC input cables connected in order to provide the maximum 4.7KW.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: How do I determine if my system board target for 2GB DIMMs is a V3CPU board?

A: V3CPU boards are used for USIV and USIV+ processors. You can determine the board type in SMS showboards output. A V3CPU board will be labelled as such as in the example output below:

Location Pwr Type of Board Board Status Test Status Domain
-------- --- ------------- ------------ ----------- ------
SB0 On CPU Active Passed A
SB1 On CPU Active Passed A
SB2 On V3CPU Available Unknown Isolated
SB3 On V3CPU Active Passed B
