Description
This document shows when "scsi-initiator-id" needs to be changed in cluster
environments, with Sun StorEdge[TM] 3xx0 SCSI arrays as shared storage.

Steps to Follow
Sun now offers different types of Sun StorEdge 3xx0 SCSI arrays - listed below.
They are all qualified to be used in clusters, with Sun Cluster 3.x software.

The following, shows where to change "scsi-initiator-id" on one node of the
cluster, to avoid "scsi-initiator-id" conflict between cluster nodes, on a
shared SCSI bus:

  • Sun StorEdge 3310/3320 with RAID controllers;
    - host SCSI channels are separated and electronically isolated by the I/O
    module and the termination board of the RAID head. So, multiple nodes do
    not share any SCSI bus, and "scsi-initiator-id" does not need to be
    changed on any node.
  • Sun StorEdge 3120/3310/3320 JBOD;
    - the JBOD I/O boards do not isolate host channels, so multiple nodes actually
    share SCSI buses; and "scsi-initiator-id" needs to be changed on one node to
    avoid conflict.

To check if multiple nodes are sharing SCSI buses(thus decide if
"scsi-initiator-id" needs to be changed):

  • Look at SCSI reset messages on one node, while the other node is doing SCSI
    reset(e.g. reboot). Multiple nodes on a shared SCSI bus will see all the
    SCSI resets done by all the nodes.
  • For SE3310/SE3320 arrays with RAID heads, one node will not see SCSI resets
    initiated by the other node.

For changing "scsi-initiator-id" procedures, refer to Technical Instruction <Document: 1007430.1> Sun[TM] Cluster 3.0/3.1: Setting the scsi-initiator-id.
