Description
Sun[TM] XVR-500 Frame Buffer on a Sun Blade[TM] 150 running Solaris[TM] 8 2/02 Operating System.

Steps to Follow
The Sun Blade 150 system with the XVR500 Graphics Accelerator card installed may hang during the boot process producing an error:"can not find console frame buffer driver" if the cd or the packages were not installed.

Sun Blade150 with Solaris[TM] 8 2/02 Operating System using the XVR500 frame buffer card must have the driver packages installed or the system will not recognize the card.

It will produce an error: "can not find console frame buffer driver".  There is a CD, the XVR500 Installation CD that ships with this card and must be installed for the system to recognize it.  If the customer does not have this cd they are able to load the packages off the Solaris[TM] 8 CD.  The drivers for the XVR500 framebuffer are available on the Solaris 8 cd one of two in the Products directory.  These packages are available on all versions of Solaris 8.  Verify the packages are installed using the command pkginfo SUNWifb*

The packages are as follows:

SUNWifb Sun Expert3D (IFB) Graphics System Software/Device Driver
SUNWifbcf Sun Expert3D (IFB) Graphics Configuration Software
SUNWifbr Sun Expert3D (IFB) Graphics System Software (Root)
SUNWifbw Sun Expert3D (IFB) Graphics Window System Support
SUNWifbx Sun Expert3D (IFB) Graphics System Software/Device Driver (64-bit)

After installing the packages, the following patch must be installed.

Patch-ID# 108576-33     Synopsis: SunOS 5.8: Expert3D IFB Graphics Patch

After the packages and the patch have been installed, a reconfiguration boot is necessary.

    # reboot -- -r

The system will now recognize your XVR500 frame buffer.
