Solution Type Technical Instruction Sure Solution 1004707.1 : Sun Fire[TM] V1280/Sun Fire[TM] E2900/Netra[TM] 1280: One fan always runs
PreviouslyPublishedAs 206533 Description One fan will always be running when there is power available to the system, even if the system if turned off. Steps to Follow You may notice that if a Sun Fire[TM] V1280, Sun Fire[TM] E2900, or Netra[TM] 1280 system is plugged in, but not turned on, that a fan is spinning in the front fan tray. When the system is plugged in, an auxiliary power bus will immediately be active to supply power to components in the system such as the System Controller. This bus will also provide power for Fan 3 on the front of the system to start spinning in order to provide airflow to keep components such as the System Controller cool. If Fan 3 fails, Fan 1 will be activated in its place until Fan 3 is restored. One of these two fans must be running or you will not be allowed to continue to power on the rest of the system.
