Goal

This document will provide guidance on several causes of failure to boot from network, cdrom or dvd.

Solution

The error message reported will look similar to the example below.

Some details might be different in regards to the machine type, the method of booting, etc. Please note this problem is not specific to the V210.

Sun Fire V210, No Keyboard
Copyright 2005 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All rights reserved.
OpenBoot 4.17.1, 8192 MB memory installed, Serial #60663517.
Ethernet address 0:3:ba:9d:a6:dd, Host ID: 839da6dd.

Rebooting with command: boot net - install
Boot device: /pci@1f,700000/network@2 File and args: - install
100 Mbps FDX Link up
Requesting Internet Address for 0:3:ba:9d:a6:dd
Requesting Internet Address for 0:3:ba:9d:a6:dd
100 Mbps FDX Link up
boot: cannot open kernel/sparcv9/unix
Enter filename [kernel/sparcv9/unix]:

In this particular case, the hardware required a later version of Solaris[TM] than what was specified on the network boot information. Similar messages would appear if a Solaris[TM] 9 DVD or CDROM was used. If error messages like this ever appear, first check the Sun System Handbook, under the machine "Quick Facts", to verify the version of Solaris required for successful booting.

It is also worth checking processor type/speed, as that can change the requirements as well.

Comment: Checked w/Paul about merging this w/an older doc. He feels this is a different issue and needs to stand alone. I changd the audience from free to contract.
