Solution Type Technical Instruction Sure Solution 1003456.1 : STMS (MPxIO) degraded path messages seen at Solaris[TM] 8, 9 or 10 boot time.
PreviouslyPublishedAs 204843 Description Boot messages seem to imply a failed path in STMS/MPxIO. Steps to Follow As Solaris[TM] boots you can see the following "degraded" message from the Sun[TM] multipath software, STMS, until both paths are enabled to the storage. The message "multipath status: degraded" can be a cause for concern even though further into the boot process it shows the path becoming optimal. It can be mistakenly inferred to be a fibre channel/path problem. For example, below is a portion of messages seen at boot time from a host with a StorEdge[TM] 99x0 array attached: ssd269 at scsi_vhci0: name g50060e80000000000000eade000000ff, bus address g50060e80000000000000eade000000ff ssd269 is /scsi_vhci/ssd@g50060e80000000000000eade000000ff <HITACHI-OPEN-E-CVS-CM-2103 cyl 48 alt 2 hd 15 sec 96> /scsi_vhci/ssd@g50060e80000000000000eade000000ff (ssd269) multipath status: degraded, path /pci@1d,600000/SUNW,qlc@1/fp@0,0 (fp0) to target address: 50060e8003eade00,ff is online Further down the messages we see the other path come online, path changes to optimal (Note the /pci@ address and wwn differ now, same ssd instance) /scsi_vhci/ssd@g50060e80000000000000eade000000ff (ssd269) multipath status: optimal, path /pci@3d,600000/SUNW,qlc@1/fp@0,0 (fp2) to target address: 50060e8003eade10,ff is online We see the below with T3/39x0 arrays, again, once the second path comes online we do not see the "degraded" status any more. Here we are seeing each side of a T3 partner group, note the paths, /sbus@ /scsi_vhci/ssd@g60020f200000a3343eede2a7000c33c4 (ssd74) multipath status: degraded, path /sbus@2,0/SUNW,qlc@1,30000/fp@0,0 (fp0) to target address: 50020f230000a334,1 is online And further down the second path comes up, note that with T3's there is the concept of a "primary" path and a "standby" path. /scsi_vhci/ssd@g60020f200000a3343eede2a7000c33c4 (ssd74) multipath status: optimal, path /sbus@6,0/SUNW,qlc@2,30000/fp@0,0 (fp2) to target address: 50020f230000cefd,1 is standby However, the mention of the path being degraded can also be of genuine concern, this needs to be looked at to determine if we have an underlying fault.
