Description

This document provides an overview of the major differences between several SSP versions. It should ease the SSP upgrade decision.

Steps to Follow

Before upgrading the SSP (System Service Software), you are required to read and understand the SSP Installation Guide to ensure system uptime and supported SSP setup.

Depending on your environment, it's always recommended to use the newest version of SSP Software. The SSP software is available for download at this location:

>= 7 OpenBoot 3.2.181

Notes:

a) Solaris[TM] 7 needs KJP 106541 rev >= 17 and patch 111422 (libnvpair patch) installed.

b) Solaris[TM] 8 < 7/01 needs patch 110945 (syslogd patch) rev >= 02 installed.

c) For more than 8 domains you must not use a Sparc Station 5 as SSP.

d) Minimum Hardware Requirement for a SSP:

    2.1 GB Disk
    170 MHz Processor
    64 MB Memory
    512 MB swap
    1 Ethernet for the external network
    1 Ethernet per CB subnetwork

e) For OpenSSP r) Minimum Requirement in case of SSP 3.5 see 806-7615 Chapter 2 (Sun Enterprise 10000 SSP 3.5 Installation Guide and Release Notes).

f) Solaris[TM] 8 10/01 in conjunction with DR model 3.0 needs to run SSP 3.5.

g) If you use features like ADR or dual grid power option, both the Main and the Spare SSP must be running the same SSP Version.

h) For more information see bug 4218687.

i) Requires Patch 105029 on the domain.

j) If all domains are running AP 2.3 or AP 2.3.1 you can safely remove the SUNWapssp package on the SSP. If you use an older Version of AP on any domain, you have to leave the package on the SSP.

k) Requires Patch 105356 (ssd patch) rev >= 08 on the domain.

l) Requires Patch 107458 (ssd patch) rev >= 09 on the domain.

m) Requires Patch 109524 (ssd patch) rev >= 01 on the domain. If your domain is running the Solaris 8 operating environment, you must use Alternate Pathing software version 2.3.1.

n) IDN (InterDomain Networks) allows you to connect your domains via highspeed, hardware connection. The 11/99 release of the Solaris 7 operating environment is the first Solaris release to support the IDN feature. IDN is supported starting in SSP version 3.2. For more info see 806-5222 (Sun Enterprise 10000 InterDomain Networks User Guide).

o) ADR (Automated Dynamic Reconfiguration) enables you to automate DR operations like attaching, moving or detaching system boards.

p) It's understood having a 2nd SSP for the SSP failover or rather a 2nd CB for the CB failover. Three Ethernet connections on the SSP are required for a "Three-Subnet Network Configuration". Check the appropriate "Sun Enterprise 10000 SSP x Installation Guide and Release Notes" for details.

q) Two new properties force_dtag_parity_mode and no_dtag_ecc_ce_scrub are added, see man page of postrc for more details.

r) OpenSSP means that a SSP Workstation or Server can run third-party software, provided that the SSP meets the OpenSSP resource requirements. For more info see 806-7615 (Sun Enterprise 10000 SSP 3.5 Installation Guide and Release Notes).

s) DR model 3.0 is available in Solaris[TM] 8 10/01 and is consistent with the DR functionality provided on other new Sun server lines. DR model 3.0 interfaces with the RCM (Reconfiguration Coordination Manager) and needs to run SSP 3.5. The older version DR model 2.0 is compliant with SSP 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 and 3.5.

t) MPxIO (Multiplexed I/O) User and Installation Guide is available on Sun Network Storage Solutions website (http://www.sun.com/storage/san).

Some older SSP versions
-----------------------

SSP 3.1.1

  • has been EOL'd. Can no longer be ordered and is no longer shipping (Nov 1st 2001).

SSP 3.2

  • has been EOL'd (Feb 28th 2001).
  • its matrix is almost the same as for SSP 3.3 with the following notable differences:
    • supports just 8 domains.
    • new features released: IDN, clock ratio 1:5 and 1:6.
    • supported SSP Version on a Spare SSP: 3.1, 3.1.1 and 3.2. If you use one of the new features released, both the Main and the Spare SSP must be running the same SSP version.
