Solution Type Technical Instruction Sure Solution 1002402.1 : Sun StorEdge[TM] 33x0/3510/3511: What does the "M" mean in the show disks output
PreviouslyPublishedAs 203363 Description 4.x firmware for Sun StorEdge[TM] 33x0/3510/3511 has some enhancements over the earlier 3.x firmware and media scan was one of them. There are queries asked on what the "M" means on the show disk output run using the sccli. This document helps in resolving the same. Steps to Follow With the array running 4.x firmware and with the host using SUNWsscs version 2.x, the show disk output looks as follows: $ sccli> show disks Ch Id Size Speed LD Status IDs Rev ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2(3) 0 136.73GB 200MB ld0 ONLINE M FUJITSU MAT3147F SUN146G 0602 S/N 000520C020H3 WWNN 500000E01118DD70 2(3) 1 136.73GB 200MB ld0 ONLINE FUJITSU MAT3147F SUN146G 0602 S/N 000520C020R1 WWNN 500000E01118FF50 2(3) 2 136.73GB 200MB ld0 ONLINE M FUJITSU MAT3147F SUN146G 0602 S/N 000520C020H4 WWNN 500000E01118DD80 2(3) 3 136.73GB 200MB ld0 ONLINE M FUJITSU MAT3147F SUN146G 0602 S/N 000520C02269 WWNN 500000E01119A310 2(3) 4 136.73GB 200MB ld0 ONLINE M FUJITSU MAT3147F SUN146G 0602 S/N 000520C02273 WWNN 500000E01119AAE0 2(3) 5 136.73GB 200MB ld0 ONLINE M FUJITSU MAT3147F SUN146G 0602 S/N 000520C020H5 WWNN 500000E01118DD90 2(3) 6 136.73GB 200MB ld0 ONLINE M FUJITSU MAT3147F SUN146G 0602 S/N 000520C02264 WWNN 500000E01119A260 2(3) 7 136.73GB 200MB ld1 ONLINE M FUJITSU MAT3147F SUN146G 0602 S/N 000520C02200 WWNN 500000E011199410 2(3) 8 136.73GB 200MB ld1 ONLINE M FUJITSU MAT3147F SUN146G 0602 S/N 000520C01Y68 WWNN 500000E011186AA0 2(3) 9 136.73GB 200MB ld1 ONLINE M FUJITSU MAT3147F SUN146G 0602 S/N 000520C020H2 WWNN 500000E01118DD60 2(3) 10 136.73GB 200MB ld1 ONLINE M FUJITSU MAT3147F SUN146G 0602 S/N 000520C020S9 WWNN 500000E011190240 2(3) 11 136.73GB 200MB GLOBAL STAND-BY FUJITSU MAT3147F SUN146G 0602 S/N 000520C01Y65 WWNN 500000E0111869B0 The following are true on the above. 1. The "M" means that media scan was running on the drive when the show disk was run. 2. The disk with ID = 1 does not have a "M" against which means that the media scan has completed on that disk. The media scan on each disk will complete at different times. If we run the command, "show disks" at a later time, the disk with id=1 may have a "M" against it, indicating that a media scan is in progress. 3. By default, with the latest 4.2x firmware, media scans at power-up are disabled. When explicitly enabled, media scans are run continuously on all active drives in all logical drives. Whenever a logical drive is created, continuous media scans begin on all its component physical drives. You can select a logical drive and change media scan settings for all physical drives in that logical drive. Global spares and unassigned drives are not part of any logical drive and so media scan does not run on these. In addition to the above, there is one more command called "show media-check" added in 2.x sccli and and using this, we can find the completion status of the media-scan. sccli> show media-check Ch ID Iteration Status ------------------------------ 2 16 1169 96% complete 2 17 1169 97% complete 2 18 1164 33% complete 2 19 1215 96% complete 2 20 1169 99% complete 2 21 1170 1% complete 2 23 1169 97% complete 2 24 1215 60% complete 2 25 1169 97% complete Product Sun StorageTek 3511 SATA Array Sun StorageTek 3510 FC Array Sun StorageTek 3310 SCSI Array Sun StorageTek 3320 SCSI Array Internal Comments There was a Bug ID 6255677 where upon a drive failure, the media scan wasn't started automatically on the replacement drive. This has been fixed by the latest 4.13 release of the firmware which is now available on SunSolve[SM] for all the 3 products ie SE3510/3310/3511. media-scan, 3310, 3510, 3511, media-check, check-media Previously Published As 82482 Change History Date: 2010-01-12 User Name: [email protected] Action: Currency & Update Date: 2006-03-20 User Name: 95826 Action: Approved Comment: - verified metadata - changed review date to 2007-03-20 - checked for TM - none added - checked audience : contract Publishing Version: 6 Date: 2006-03-20 User Name: 95826 Action: Accept Comment: Version: 0 Attachments This solution has no attachment |
