Product
Sun StorageTek 6920 System

Bug Id
<SUNBUG: 6216842>

Date of Resolved Release
04-AUG-2005

Impact

In case of a back-end fibre channel failure, the DSP-1000 component of the Sun StorEdge (SE) 6920 array may fail to provide host access to one or more of its volumes. Systems may temporarily lose access to the data in the SE 6920 array.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following platform:

  • Sun StorEdge 6920 array with System Processor (SP) version 2.0.5 and earlier

This condition can be triggered by either a fibre channel path failure external to the DSP (to one of the back-end SE 6120 arrays) or by a Storage Resource/Storage I/O card (SRC/SIO) failure in the DSP.

If there is a failure with one or more of the redundant fibre channel connections to the back-end SE array components, the DSP-1000 may fail to re-enumerate one or more of those connections through the pre-determined alternate path to the back-end storage.

The system processor version can be determined from "/etc/release" with the following command (run on the SP):

    [sp0]# cat /etc/release
Solaris 9 s9_58shwpl3 SPARC
...
Sun StorEdge(tm) 6920
Version: 2.0.2
Build Date: July 2, 2004
    ...

Symptoms

The most obvious symptom will be unavailability of one or more of the SE 6920 LUNs on the attached hosts. On the DSP, logging will appear similar to the following examples:

    Jun 15 20:58:26 dsp00 06/15/2005 20:57:40 LOG_CRIT (CONFIG: 0-0)
iSCSI Target Lun 0 on (/4/1 to 3/4 - CANT CREATE FROM VSE) not created
    Jun 15 20:58:26 dsp00 06/15/2005 20:57:40 LOG_CRIT (VCM: 5-0)
failed to setup iSCSI connection to 0x3040000 for volume
    60:00:15:D0:00:01:EA:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:05:16
    Jun 15 20:58:26 dsp00 06/15/2005 20:57:40 LOG_INFO (VCM: 5-0)
    Volume 60:00:15:D0:00:01:EA:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:05:16: OFFLINE

or:

    Dec 22 14:40:32 dsp00 12/22/2004 14:39:45 LOG_CRIT (CONFIG: 0-0)
iSCSI Target Lun 0 on (IntIcs_0303/IntT_0303 - CANT CREATE INIT NODE)
    not created

Workaround

To work around the described issue, reboot the DSP-1000 component of the SE6920 array.

For more information on all 6920 procedures, please see the "Sun StorEdge System 6920 Release Notes" at http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/pdf/817-5229-14.pdf.

Resolution

This issue is addressed on the following platform:

  • Sun StorEdge 6920 Arrays with System Processor (SP) version 3.0.0 or later

Note: StorADE is used to upgrade all 6920 components to the most current SP version.

Internal Comments

The above was observed on a customer System1 SE6920 array running release 2.0.3, but since the bug is fixed in Unity 3.0.0 , any customer running a release lower than Unity 3 can encounter this issue.
