Upgrading internal disk drives ST336605FC (36.4GB) or ST373405FC (73.4GB) with firmware revision 0938 ... see below for details:

1. Impact

Upgrading internal disk drives ST336605FC (36.4GB) or ST373405FC (73.4GB) with firmware revision 0938 (as delivered in patch 109962-13) on Sun Fire V880 Servers may cause a system panic when attempting a reboot.

Patch 109962-13 has been WITHDRAWN and is no longer available on SunSolve.

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

  • Sun Fire V880 with Internal Disk Drive ST336605FC (36.4GB) with firmware revision 0938 (as delivered in patch 109962-13)
  • Sun Fire V880 with Internal Disk Drive ST373405FC (73.4GB) with firmware revision 0938 (as delivered in patch 109962-13)

Notes:

  1. This issue only affects the above mentioned drives on the Sun Fire V880 with firmware revision 0938.
  2. The firmware download utility will not allow a disk with a mounted partition to process a firmware upgrade.

To determine if a Sun Fire V880 system contains one of the drive types listed above, run the format(1M) command as "root" and use the "inquiry" option from the format menu as shown in the following example:

    # format

4. Workaround

To work around the described issue (if the disk was upgraded to 0938 firmware):

1) Remove any drives that had been upgraded to 0938 firmware.

2) Reboot the system.

3) Re-insert the drives with 0938 firmware.

4) Download 0638 firmware to any drive with 0938 firmware.

Repeat the process for each affected disk.

Note: Disk firmware revision 0638 can be downloaded with either patch 109962-12 or patch 109962-14 (revision -14 is recommended).

Downloading firmware revision 0638 onto these disks is only a temporary workaround for this issue.
