Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1019455.1 : Sun[TM] Fire V445: FAN Noise : Once every 24 hours the system generates a short burst of high level fan noise
PreviouslyPublishedAs 239845 Symptoms In some instances the Sun[TM] Fire V445 server is deployed as a workgroup server, often installed in computer racks with minimal sound insulation. Occasionally we get reports from customer that a short burst of excessive fan noise is generated by the Sun Fire v445 servers once a day. The noise generated by these systems is often misunderstood as a product defect. Resolution Engineering has explained this behavior as Normal. This behavior has been brought to the attention of Sun Fire V445 product engineering . Engineering has responded with the following comment: The fan viability check every 24 hours on ALOM 1.6.4, or greater, releases is an expected behavior. ALOM 1.6.4 released a new fan algorithm to keep fan quiter during normal operations. To avoid having the fan spin up to max during normal working hours simply reset the ALOM [MBC (sc>resetsc -y)] at the time of day you perfer to have this check done. Since this is not a product defect please do not replace any Sun Fire V445 hardware.
