Symptoms
The Sun Enterprise[TM] 3500 server (E3500) is a special case when replacing internal disks that are under Solstice Disksuite.
The E3500 has dual ported FC-AL drives, making it similar to the Sun StorEdge[TM] A5x00 array. This procedure should be used for the following:
  • Replacing a simple data disk
  • Replacing a mirrored disk under Solstice disksuite control
The procedures are all individually explained in various documents for the A5x00, and Solstice Disksuite related documents. The purpose of this document is to bring these procedures together in one document for FC-AL disks in the E3500 enclosure.

Resolution
Procedures:
REPLACING A SIMPLE DATA DISK

1. Ensure the following patches are installed:
  • Solaris[TM] 9      Luxadm patch - 113049-01 or higher
  • Solaris[TM] 8     Luxadm patch - 109529-06 or higher
  • Solaris[TM] 7     IB & Luxadm patch - 107473-07 or higher
  • Solaris 2.6           sf/socal/ib/luxadm patch - 105375-10 or higher &  ssd patch - 105356-08 or higher
  • Solaris[TM] 2.5.1     sf/socal/ib/luxadm patch - 105310-08 or higher & ssd patch - 104708-16 or higher
These provide support for the luxadm commands on the E3500.

2. Unmount the disk and then stop it with the command

luxadm stop <logical path or physical path or WWN ...>

3. Remove the device entries, the following command will complete this

luxadm remove_device <logical path or physical path or WWN ...>

4. Replace the disk, then

    luxadm insert  <no arguments required>

This will recreate the device entries, the device is now ready to be used.

REPLACING A MIRRORED DISK UNDER Solstice Disksuite CONTROL

1. Ensure the following patches are installed:
  • Solaris 9    Luxadm patch - 113049-01 or higher
  • Solaris 8     Luxadm patch - 109529-06 or higher
  • Solaris 7     IB & Luxadm patch - 107473-07 or higher
  • Solaris 2.6     sf/socal/ib/luxadm patch - 105375-10 or higher & ssd patch - 105356-08 or higher
  • Solaris 2.5.1   sf/socal/ib/luxadm patch - 105310-08 or higher &  ssd patch - 104708-16 or higher
These provide support for the luxadm commands on the E3500.

2. Remove any metadb's located on this failed HD

3. Remove the device entries, the following command will complete this

luxadm remove_device <logical path or physical path or WWN ...>

4. Replace the disk, then

    luxadm insert  <no arguments required>
    or
luxadm insert_device <logical path or physical path or WWN ...>

5. Recreate the partition table with format (use an exact copy of this part table as its mirrored HD)

6. Recreate the metadb's on this new HD with

    metadb -a -c <number copies> <device eg c0t0d0s7>

7. Invoke metareplace -e <submirror> <device eg c0t0d0s0> <new device> to sync all submirrors in needs maintenance mode

8. verify sync with   metastat | grep %
