Applies to:Sun Storage L9 Tape LibrarySun Storage DLT Tape Drive - Version: Not Applicable and later [Release: N/A and later] All Platforms Checked for relevance on 31-Jan-2011. SymptomsDescriptionTrying to label or write to a DLT tape IV, in a DLT-1 tape drive (Sun StorEdge[TM] tape autoloader), might fail with the messages: nsrmmd #1: tape_cdi_open open for READ/WRITE failed: drive status is CauseTwo possible causes :[1] This might happen when tapes are being (re)used, that were previously written on a DLT4000 or DLT7000 drive. Those tapes are read-compatible with the DLT-1 drive(and thus the label operation can successfully read the original label if there is one present) but not write-compatible. Solution : ---------- Erase the tape using the dd command : # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rmt/ (let it run for 30 seconds) This will overwrite the tape lable with a string of 0s. If you still get the Sun StorEdge Enterprise Backup Software tape label error after running the dd command, try the next step of degaussing the tape. Degauss the tape media by passing it through a high magnetic field a few times, while turning the tape 90 degrees before each pass. [2] this is a bad tape SolutionThe issue is seen in Sun StorEdge[TM] Enterprise Backup Software, but is generated by the DLT-1 tapedrive in an L9.Solution : ---------- Replace the tape volume.
