Symptoms

The System Management Services(SMS) software, may report an over-temperature event of 128 degrees Celsius on SunFire[TM] 12K/15K/E20K/E25K servers, using UltraSPARC[R] IV processors.

The following error message may be displayed:

Apr 7 05:25:19 2004 sunhost esmd[627]: [1909 2829729833271537 ERR DetectorT.cc 245] An unsafe high temperature has been detected on CPU1, located on V3CPU at SB10.
PROCPAIR at SB10/PP0 is being powered off. The temperature detected is 128.00c; should be 5.00c to 105.00c

Cause

The temperature is erroneously reported, due to a problem with a board sensor.

Solution

Replace the system board.

Internal Comments
For Oracle/Sun internal use only.

This is not the real temperature of the processor;
it is bug 5030969
The temperature reported is the power on default value
wrongly interpreted by SMS as a legal value.

The sensor in question can only report temperatures between 0C and 127C
When receiving a value of -128C or 128C,
SMS should report an error (because of an illegal value)
and not take incorrect actions.

Most of the units using this sensor have been screened out
but it is possible that a small number still exist at customer locations

The fix required a change in the temperature circuit
so the system board must be replaced.

SMS, over temp, UltraSPARC IV, 128, temperature
