PreviouslyPublishedAs 229058 Symptoms When trying to save a Microsoft Excel 2002 or Microsoft Excel 2003 spreadsheet to a share published from the 5210, 5310 or 5310c Network Attached Storage, an error dialog box is generated stating the following: The file (filename.xls) may have been changed by another user since you last saved it. In that case, what do you want to do? ? Save a copy ? Overwrite changes Resolution This is a new feature introduced in Microsoft Excel 2002 that protects you from overwriting someone else's changes. When the spreadsheet is opened from a network share, and your computer looses network connectivity, a second person can open the same file, make changes, save, and then close the file without your knowledge. Now you then try to save the file, Excel compares the time stamp of the file in cached in memory with that of the file on the network share. If they don't match, Excel prompts you with the message described earlier. Under certain documented circumstances, this error may be incorrectly generated. When you save the file on a network server that is running an intermediate service such as Services for Macintosh, additional data to the file after Excel has cached the timestamp. Files opened with write access have the owner information written to the file which results in an update of the "modified time stamp". Due to Network latency issues the timestamp information may not be immediately updated to the 5210 or 5310 NAS. When Excel checks this timestamp, it is reading the timestamp from before the owner information had been written. This can occur more frequently if the file is located on Network Attached Storage or across a Wide Area Network (WAN) See Microsoft KnowledgeBase article 324491 for complete problem explanation, workarounds, HotFixes, SerivcePacks and registry modifications. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324491/en-us Additional Information Registry modifications are required to resolve this issue. It is not our intention to provide the content of the Microsoft KnowledgeBase document in this SRDB. A link has been provided which points at the document containing complete explanation of the issue as well as the instructions for making the registry modifications.
