Symptoms
A Sun StorEdge[TM] T3/T3+ volume initialization, using the command "vol init", fails with the error message:
 ERROR (200015) VN_RAIDERR: RAID error

There is no other indication of failure. A volume can be created or added without any problem.

Example:

   t3h:/:<20>vol add vol1 data u1d01-04 raid 5 standby u1d09
   t3h:/:<1>vol list
volume capacity raid data standby
vol1 67.445 GB 1 u1d01-04 u1d09
   t3h:/:<21>vol init vol1 data
WARNING - Volume data will be initialized to zero.
WARNING - Volume initialization can take a significant amount of time.

Resolution
Root Cause
At least one of the T3/T3+ drives is not in a usable state. The operational state is not showing STATUS "ready", and STATE "enabled".

Below is an example of an abnormal DISK (u1d04):

       STATUS STATE
------- ----------
offline enabled
fault disabled
DISK STATUS STATE ROLE PORT1 PORT2 TEMP VOLUME
------ ------- ---------- ---------- --------- --------- ---- ------
u1d01 ready enabled data disk ready ready 40 v1-r5
u1d02 ready enabled data disk ready ready 38 v1-r5
u1d03 ready enabled data disk ready ready 40 v1-r5
u1d04 offline enabled
DISK STATUS STATE ROLE PORT1 PORT2 TEMP VOLUME
------ ------- ---------- ---------- --------- --------- ---- ------
u1d01 ready enabled data disk ready ready 40 v1-r5
u1d02 ready enabled data disk ready ready 38 v1-r5
u1d03 ready enabled data disk ready ready 40 v1-r5
u1d04 fault disabled

Resolution Steps:

  1. Confirm if the questionable drive is truely defective.
    • Pull out and reseat the questionable drive.
    • If reseating the drive does NOT help, attempt to power-cycle the array, AFTER ensuring that ALL the volumes in the array are NOT used.
  2. Once the questionable drive is confirmed to be defective, proceed with drive replacement.

Relief/Workaround
In the following example, a new volume "v1-r5" is created with only 3 drives instead of the original 4, i.e. drives "u1d01-03" instead of "u1d01-04".
    t3h:/:<24>vol add v1-r5 data u1d01-03 raid 5 standby u1d09
    t3h:/:<25>vol init v1-r5 data
WARNING - Volume data will be initialized to zero.
WARNING - Volume initialization can take a significant amount of time.
Continue ? [N]: y
Volume initialization in progress...
    t3h:/:<26>vol list
volume capacity raid data standby
v1-r5 67.445 GB 5 u1d01-03 u1d09
