SymptomsThere are times when Sun StorEdge[TM] Enterprise NetBackup software, sends the MOVE MEDIUM command to a tape library, too soon after sending the REWIND/UNLOAD command to a drive. The library will attempt to move thetape cartridge back to its home cell, before the drive has actually ejected the cartridge. The drive has not ejected the cartridge, because it hasn't completed all the steps required, in a REWIND/UNLOAD operation. The library will try to move the cartridge, and find that the drive is still rewinding. The library will post an FSC (FSC3E24 or 3E2(x)) to it's FSC log and go on to it's next command. The end result is, that the drive is downed by the Sun StorEdge Enterprise NetBackUp software, and the tape cartridge is left in the drive, ready to be dismounted. Changes{CHANGE}Cause{CAUSE}SolutionResolutionSet, or change the MEDIA_UNMOUNT_DELAY setting, in the following file, based on the criteria list below : /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bp.conf 25-30 minutes for DLT 7000, DLT8000 and SuperDLT A setting of 20 minutes(represented in seconds), would appear like this in the bp.conf file: MEDIA_UNMOUNT_DELAY = 1200 This needs to be set on all media servers Additional Information Note: If there is no entry in the bp.conf file for MEDIA_UNMOUNT_DELAY, the default setting of 180 seconds will apply. As shown, this is not adequate for most drives in the Sun StorEdge L180 and L700 tape libraries. The documented description of MEDIA_UNMOUNT_DELAY from Veritas, does not support the @behavior documented in this SRDB, but the solution has been confirmed by STK and I have talked with @several backline TSE's at Veritas who agree that it does provide relief. There is no guarantee that this @behavior (and relief) will persist in future NetBackup releases.
While this SRDB may still provide relief in some circumstances, it has come to my attention that Veritas @now believes that as of NBU 5.x MEDIA_UNMOUNT_DELAY tuning, will not provide any relief from @FSC 3E2x on STK L700 and L180 robots. 3e24, MEDIA_UNMOUNT_DELAY, down, downed, L700, L180, 3e2 Previously Published As 74280 Attachments This solution has no attachment |
