Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1012022.1 : Error - RCM notification failed: error_code: 14
PreviouslyPublishedAs 216474 Symptoms The following error appears on boot up Sep 9 13:24:57 flext6 devfsadmd[59]: [ID 742014 daemon.error] RCM notification failed: error_code: 14 RCM stands for Reconfiguration Coordination Manager Resolution The error occurs because of RCM accessing /var/run before the /var/run is mounted or while the /var/run is being mounted in response to certain events. The interaction of RCM with /var/run could possibly cause mounting of /var/run to fail during booting. This problem exists in Solaris[TM] 8 and is fixed in Solaris[TM] 9. This error can be ignored if it occurs during booting and /var/run is currently mounted as tmpfs filesystem, which is usually the case. The output of the command "mount | grep /var" should show something like the following: /var/run on swap read/write/setuid/xattr/dev=1 on Wed Jan 29 09:57:59 2003 In every case so far, /var/run actually mounts so the the error can be ignored. The /var/run directory is used on boot to start daemons. If the /var/run directory did not mount, the machine would not boot. If the customer does not want to see the error message or if mounting of /var/run fails during booting, install the Solaris[TM} 8 KU patch 108528-11 for sparc systems and 108529-11 for x86 systems. In a few cases the error could still occur after installing the patch.
