Symptoms
Luxadm remove_device fails with: "inquiry failed." for A5x00

Resolution
Usually a disk in an Sun StorEdge[TM] A5x00 array is too far gone to remove in the normal way. The ports on the drive will be bypassed:

#> luxadm display <enclosure name>

SLOT FRONT DISKS REAR DISKS

0 unassigned

1 On(Bypassed:AB)

You can try to reconnect the ports via the front panel, but this is usually unsuccessful when the  luxadm remove_device  fails. To remedy, do the following:

-

  1. Use the front panel to select the appropriate disk.  See Figure 1.

  2. Once the disk is selected, there will be a button labeled "I/O Off." Select this and you will be taken to another screen to verify the spin down. When the drive has been spun down, the icon for the drive will be displayed as hollow, rather than solid.  See Figure 2.

  3. Physically remove the drive and replace it with a new one.  See Figure 3.

  4. On the lcd display you need to make the drive icon solid again, so press the  I/O On  button to spin up the drive.

  5. Next, in Solaris, issue:

     luxadm insert_device <enclosure name>,f/r<slot>

      (or alternatively)

 luxadm insert_device /dev/rdsk/c#t#d#s2

  1. Last, verify the new disk is recognized by issuing:

     luxadm display <enclosurename>
