Symptoms

When attempting to connect an Inter Switch Link (ISL) between a Brocade
Silkwork 3900 and a Brocade Silkwork 3800, the ISL is not established.

islshow on the 3900 reports:
"1: 0 -> (incompatible)"

switchstatusshow on the 3900 will report:
"segmented,(incompatible)"

errdump -a on the 3900 reports an error similar to:
"Switch: 0, Warning FABRIC-SEGMENTED, 3, port 0, ELP rejected by the
other switch"

switchshow on the 3800 reports:
"segmented,incompatible,(Op Mode incompatible)"
On the port used for the ISL.

errDump 0 on the 3800 reports:
"incompatible flow control parameters"

Resolution

Assuming Extended Fabric license is enabled on both the switches.

The Core Switch PID format on the 3800 needs to be changed.

On the 3900 this is set to 1 by default and cannot be changed.
On the 3800 this is set to 0 by default but can be changed.
Changing this parameter will require switch downtime.

Log into the switch

> switchDisable
> configure
Press return until you get to core Switch PID format.
Change that variable to 1.
Press return through the remaining parameters.

Use configShow to verify the change.

> switchEnable

This may effect other Brocade switch models.
