Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1010518.1 : Sun Fire[TM] V440 Server: Target ID Error Message when Using raidctl to Mirror Disk
PreviouslyPublishedAs 214453 Symptoms After a new OS (loaded on c1t1d0) installation, the customer tried to: raidct1 c1t1d0 c1t0d0 and got the following messages: #raidctl -c c1t1d0 c1t0d0 Primary target ID must be less than secondary target ID. #raidctl No RAID volumes found Resolution The command is working as it should and is returning the correct message. To create a raid volume, the disk being mirrored must have a t# lower than the t# of the mirror disk. This requirement is due to the interaction between the way Solaris[TM] handles the boot disk and the built-in feature of the hardware RAID controller that cannot be disabled. Additional Information If customers are encountering this situation, they have two options to resolve it: 1. Choose a different disk with a higher target ID to be the secondary mirror disk; e.g., c1t2 or c1t3 if you are mirroring c1t1. 2. Reinstall or manually copy the data from the primary target disk with the higher ID to the intended secondary target disk with the lower ID. Use this lower ID disk as the primary disk. Then you will be able to create the mirror as normal, with the primary target ID being lower than the secondary. This may require additional steps and modifications to Solaris files and OBP parameters if the original primary target disk is being used as the Solaris boot disk.
