Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1009562.1 : Sun Fire[TM] V20z/40z server: Disk Full Size not recognized during x86 Solaris[TM] OS install
PreviouslyPublishedAs 213186 Symptoms During Solaris[TM] x86 (8,9,10 Releases) Operating System(OS) Installation, the full capacity of disks is not recognized. The OS can still be installed, but the reported size of the disk varies between 11GB and 20GB, instead of the actual size of the disk. This problem especially occurs with 73GB HDD's. Resolution An ITU diskette with the sd patch is available to resolve this problem, however in some cases the ITU is still not enough and the below workaround is required. The following 73Gb disks are mostly affected by this issue. Seagate firmware level 0002 Fujitsu firmware level 0104(10K RPM) Fujitsu firmware level 0102(15K RPM) Upgrading the disk firmware would be a suitable solution, however disk firmware Relief/Workaround For a new installation, follow this procedure: ---------------------------------------------- 1. Boot the system from CDROM in Single user mode. 2. In "format" command choose the affected disk and use "fdisk" to delete the 3. In "fdisk" menu choose option number "3" ( Delete partition ) to delete the 4. Then reboot the system and continue the installation. 5. While selecting the disk for OS installation, you can create the new VTOC for Additional Information Sun Alerts: Sun Alert <Document: 1000312.1> : The Full Size of a Large Disk May Not be Usable by fdisk(1M) or format(1M) on a Solaris x86 System.
