Symptoms
Occasionally, a LUN created on the Sun StorEdge [TM] 5210/5310 NAS array indicates "no partition table". This can be seen via the telnet menu interface or the Web Admin GUI.
example:
SE5310a StorEdge 5310 NAS Disks & Volumes
  Drive Volume(s) Available
A. ide1d1 /cvol /dvol 0B
B. isp2d020 /home 398.6GB
C. isp4d001 /vol1 407.7GB
D. isp2d022 -- no partition table

Any attempts to configure this LUN by initializing it could be met with a failure, indicated by a message, "Invalid/Missing partition".

the problem can also be seen while trying to configure LUN paths using the telnet menu interface or the Web Admin GUI.

isp2d022 -- no partition table 1
Paths:
1. isp2d022 HBA 0x2, SID0x2, Lun 0x2 Up

All LEDs, front and back on the array could be green and there could be no indication of any errors on the NAS Recovery Manager(NRM) using the "Recovery Guru" functionality.

Resolution
Reboot the NAS head.
Once it has rebooted, perform the following actions.
1. If this is a cluster, then check the lun ownerships.
Make sure that the lun has been given an ownership.

In the telnet menu,
Under the menu "extensions" locate the option for FAILOVER/MOVE LUNS and
select it. (the corresponding letter changes depending on which features are enabled)

A similar screen will be seen:

Make sure that the lun has been assigned an owner.

2. If that is indeed the case or if this is not a cluster, then using the following action, initialize the partition.

     D. Disks & Volumes
----> Enter the alphabet of the LUN to be configured.
-----> Enter "1" to initialize the LUN.
     Lun is initialized successfully.

Through the telnet menu, the LUN is seen as follows:

7 571379547 0 --
8 571379547 0 --

Through the Web Admin GUI, the LUN is seen to be "clean".

LUN paths can also be configured successfully.
