Symptoms

When writing small files to a Sun StorEdge[TM] 9960 system, write performance
is acceptable. However, when writing large files, write performance drops
dramatically.

Resolution

When an Hitachi Channel Adapter(CHA) with 1Gb/sec ports, is connected to a McData
switch, and a host with a Sun JNI Host Bus Adapter(HBA) # 375-3156, 2Gb/sec, and
are mapped into the same zone, the port to which the Sun system is connected on
the McData switch, needs to be configured to 1Gb/sec.

Under some conditions, the speed mis-match between the Hitachi 1Gb/sec CHA ports,
and the SUN JNI 2Gb/sec, can cause severe write performance degradation on the
Sun StorEdge 9960 system. There may be a speed syncronization problem between the
McData switch and the connected ports, unless they are all configured for the
same speed.

Relief/Workaround

none

Additional Information

This symptom and resolution, was seen on a Sun Fire[TM] V440 server, with Sun JNI
fiber card # 375-3156, Hitachi SE9960, McData Switch 6064 and Solaris 8 7/03
OS.

Comment: I agree with Brian's earlier commments. The mention of FTP should be removed completely from the title and document. This is a issue with autonegotiation between the HBA, switch, and CHA on the array.

The doc will be rejected until all mention of FTP has been removed.

Comment: I think you are talking about setting the same link speed on the storage/switch and host. If so can more information about this be put in (to justify why this should be required) and remove all the superfluous info about ftp.

Sending back to draft to allow for a rework.
