Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1008306.1 : Unable to downgrade NAS os due to new checkpoint format
PreviouslyPublishedAs 211370 Symptoms If checkpoints are enabled and volumes have been created while running NAS os 4.2x, on the Sun StorEdge[TM] 5210/5310 or Sun StorageTek[TM] 5310/5320 NAS products, downgrading to a 4.12 version of the NAS operating system will be prohibited. This is due to a new checkpoint format being used in 4.2x. This format is incompatable with the NAS os 4.12 and below. If you try to downgrade the NAS os to this rev with new checkpoints in existance, the following error will be produced. "Cannot reboot to previous version | Volumes with new checkpoint format exist" Resolution The solution to this problem is to delete the currently existing checkpoints. This can be done via the GUI, telnet menu or the command line. NOTE: USING THIS PROCEDURE DELETES ALL CHECKPOINT DATA! GUI: ---- 1. Expand the "File Volume Operations" selection in the lefthand window pane. 2. Choose "Edit Volume Properties" 3. In the righthand window pane, select each listed volume and review the "Enable Checkpoint" check box. If this field is checked, uncheck it. Make necessary changes to disable checkpoints on all volumes. 4. Press the "Apply" button. Once changes have been saved, you will be able to boot the prior 4.1x version of the NAS os. TELNET MENU: ------------ 1. Telnet to NAS, and log in as administrator 2. Launch the menu by hitting return at the [Menu] prompt 3. Selct "D. Disks & Volumes" 4. Select the letter beginning with the first letter representing the file volumes (do not manipulate /cvol or /dvol) 5. A list of volumes configured on the selected disk will be displayed in table form. Select "1. Edit" 6. At this point, the individually listed disks can be manipulated. for the first hilighted volume, select "6. Checkpoints", "1. Edit" and verify that the first editable field "Enable Checkpoints" is set to NO. 7. If change is required, enter "N" to set the field to "No" and save the change by entering "7. Save Changes" NOTE: This process must be done for each configured volume When all checkpoints have been disabled, you will be able to boot the prior 4.1x version of the NAS os COMMAND LINE: ------------- 1. Telnet to NAS, and log in as administrator 2. Issue the mount command which lists all currently mounted volumes and associated checkpoints. This output will allow you to idetify checkpoints created using the new format. 5310 > mount volume type use% free/size requests origin /NewVl sfs2 1% 133.427G/134.382G 123+0 isp1d022,4 : : /upgradeckpt.chkpnt sfs2cpv 100% 0/5.878M 7+0 /upgradeckpt /virusscan sfs2 47% 24.039M/45.195M 249002+1 isp1d021,2 2% 10K/11K /virusscantgt sfs2 47% 24.191M/45.195M 508797+1 isp2d001,3 2% 10K/11K Checkpoints are identifed as a type of "sfs2cpv" Make note of all volumes that have checkpoints. These checkpoints must be removed to allow the downgrade. 5310 > chkpntabort /upgradeckpt All checkpoints on /upgradeckpt will be deleted and can not be recovered. You must promptly run the file volume check-and-repair (fsck) procedure. Do you really want to abort checkpoints? ? [no] y /upgradeckpt checkpoints aborted If you want to verify that the checkpoints have indeed been removed, issue the mount command again and note that all the volumes of type sfs2cpv are nolonger listed. 5310 > mount volume type use% free/size requests origin /NewVl sfs2 1% 133.427G/134.382G 123+0 isp1d022,4 : : /virusscan sfs2 47% 24.039M/45.195M 249002+1 isp1d021,2 2% 10K/11K /virusscantgt sfs2 47% 24.191M/45.195M 508797+1 isp2d001,3 2% 10K/11K You will now be able to reboot to the previous4.1x version of the NAS os Product Sun StorageTek 5310 NAS Gateway/Cluster System Sun StorageTek 5320 NAS Appliance Sun StorageTek 5320 NAS Gateway/Cluster System Sun StorageTek 5310 NAS Gateway System Sun StorageTek 5310 NAS Appliance Sun StorageTek 5210 NAS Appliance 5210, 5310, 5320, NAS, checkpoint Previously Published As 87418 Change History Date: 2006-11-16 User Name: 71396 Action: Approved Comment: Performed final review of article.
