Symptoms

When the fmservice service fails to start up successfully on a management host, the following error occurs:
An Internal Error occurred. The CAM FMS engine may not be responding

Cause

The FMS engine may be in Maintenance state and needs to be restarted.

Solution

The following steps can be done to check the FMS engine and restart if needed.

On Solaris[TM] 10

1. Check service is running. If in maintenance state it needs to be cleared:

# svcs -xv fmservice
svc:/system/fmservice:default (Sun Storage Tek Fault Management Services)
State: maintenance since Fri 15 Sep 2006 03:19:05 PM MDT
Reason: Start method failed repeatedly, last exited with status 1.
See: http://sun.com/msg/SMF-8000-KS
See: man -M /usr/share/man -s 1M fmservice
See: /var/svc/log/system-fmservice:default.log
Impact: This service is not running.

  • If the "State:" is in "maintenance", move to Step 2.
  • If the "State:" is not in "maintenance", this document does not apply to the issue you encounter.
2. Clear and restart the service:

# svcadm clear fmservice
# svcadm enable fmservice

3. Confirm that the service is running:

# svcs -xv fmservice
svc:/system/fmservice:default (Sun Storage Tek Fault Management Services)
State: online since Fri 15 Sep 2006 03:38:03 PM MDT
See: man -M /usr/share/man -s 1M fmservice
See: /var/svc/log/system-fmservice:default.log
Impact: None.

On Solaris[TM] 8 & 9

1. Check service is running. You should see a java service and a wrapper watchdog process:

# ps -ef | grep SUNWsefms
root 2243 2201 0 15:39:42 pts/1 0:00 grep SUNWsefms
root 2237 2236 0 15:38:04 ? 0:06 /usr/java//bin/java -DSUNWsefms=../ -Xms8m -Xmx128m -Djava.library.path=../lib
root 2236 1 0 15:38:03 ? 0:00 /opt/SUNWsefms/sbin/./wrapper-solaris-sparc-32 /opt/SUNWsefms/sbin/../System/wr

2. Start FMS if it isn't running:

/opt/SUNWsefms/sbin/fmservice.sh start

On Windows

1. Check if service is running:

Open up the services from the control panel. It should be in the Administrative Tools. Look for the "Sun StorageTek Fault Management Service" and check that the service is running.

2. To start the service select the 'Start' button or run the following command:

net start Sun_STK_FMS

On Linux

1.  Check if FMS is running:

#/opt/sun/cam/private/fms/sbin/fmservice.sh status
An Internal Error occurred. The Fault Management Service may not be responding.
#

2.  Restart if it is not:

# /opt/sun/cam/private/fms/sbin/fmservice.sh start
